Google has removed more than 1.75 million fake and malicious applications from the Play Store and permanently banned 80,000 developer accounts as part of a large-scale global enforcement action to strengthen security for Android users.
The action was carried out using AI-based security systems designed to identify malware, data theft risks and online fraud. The company said the initiative aims to safeguard users’ personal information, prevent the distribution of fraudulent applications and reinforce the Play Store as a secure and reliable digital platform.
Malware and Scam Applications Identified and Removed
Several of the removed applications contained hidden malware capable of compromising users’ banking data, personal information and device access. Some applications were also found to activate paid subscriptions without user consent, resulting in unauthorized charges.
Google’s advanced AI security systems detected these threats before the applications achieved large-scale downloads, enabling their removal from the Play Store at an early stage. The company said the action reduces the risk of cyber fraud and data theft.

Permanent Blocking of Suspicious Applications and Developer Accounts
Google blocked 255,000 suspicious applications before they could gain access to users’ sensitive data, preventing potential data leaks and cyberattacks.
In addition, approximately 80,000 developer accounts were permanently banned from the Play Store for policy violations and fraudulent activity. The company stated that entities compromising user security would not be allowed to operate on the platform.
AI Integration and Policy Measures to Strengthen Oversight
Google said it is now reviewing applications at early stages of development using AI tools. These systems are integrated with Android Studio and the Data Safety section to identify malware and suspicious activity.
The company also removed more than 160 million fake reviews and ratings to improve the reliability of information available to users. The measures apply globally and are intended to enhance the security of the app download experience for Android users, including in India.
