A dispute over the repayment of borrowed money allegedly escalated in Darbhanga, where a restaurant operator was reportedly surrounded and severely beaten by around 20 youths. The incident took place at a Jhatka meat restaurant located on the premises of the Survey Office in the Nagar police station area. The incident occurred late Wednesday evening and caused a brief commotion in the locality. The youths allegedly vandalised the restaurant and damaged chairs, tables and other items. When the restaurant operator objected, he and female employees who attempted to intervene were also allegedly assaulted and pushed.
The restaurant operator sustained serious injuries in the assault and was taken to Darbhanga Medical College and Hospital (DMCH) with the help of people present nearby. The injured operator was identified as 32-year-old Sumit Kumar Jha, son of Awadhesh Kumar Jha, a resident of Sarasopahi Rampur village under Pandoul police station in Madhubani district. Sumit operates the restaurant and supports his family through the business.
According to Sumit Kumar Jha, who described the incident while receiving treatment, a youth named Deepak Jha had visited the restaurant around three to four days before the incident with about eight friends to have a meal. After eating, when it was time to make the payment, the youth allegedly said that he did not have the money immediately and assured the restaurant operator that he would pay the following day. The operator said he trusted him at the time and did not insist on immediate payment.
After the outstanding amount was not paid, the restaurant operator allegedly called several times asking for the money to be returned. Despite the calls, the outstanding amount was allegedly not paid. Over this issue, Deepak Jha allegedly arrived at the restaurant suddenly on Wednesday evening with around 20 youths. According to the operator, the youths started creating a disturbance as soon as they arrived and began damaging chairs, tables and other items kept inside the restaurant.
The restaurant operator said the situation worsened when he tried to stop the youths from vandalising the premises. He alleged that the youths surrounded him and began assaulting him with chairs and sticks. He sustained serious injuries in the attack. During the incident, female employees present at the restaurant tried to intervene and were also allegedly pushed. The disturbance continued inside the restaurant for a considerable period.
According to the report, some of the youths were also allegedly carrying knives during the incident. However, the police have not yet provided detailed confirmation regarding the weapons allegedly possessed by the accused. The accused left the location after the incident. People nearby helped the injured restaurant operator and took him to the hospital for treatment.
After receiving information about the incident, Nagar police reached the spot and inspected the scene. The police assessed the damage caused to the restaurant and examined the situation at the location. CCTV footage is being considered an important piece of evidence. The restaurant operator said that cameras installed at the premises recorded the entire incident. Police are examining the footage to identify those allegedly involved.
According to the police, the process of registering an FIR will be taken forward after the injured operator recovers and submits an application. For now, police are working to identify and trace the accused youths on the basis of CCTV footage and other facts related to the incident. At the time of the report, there was no official information about the arrest of any accused.
The incident took place in an area considered crowded. The arrival of a large number of youths inside the restaurant, the alleged vandalism and the alleged assault on the operator have caused concern among nearby shopkeepers and local residents. At the local level, there has also been discussion that if there was a dispute over an outstanding payment, it could have been resolved through dialogue or legal means, but the allegations of assault and vandalism have made the matter more serious.
Police investigation is currently central to the case. CCTV footage is being examined to establish how many people were present inside the restaurant at the time of the incident, who was involved in the assault and how the vandalism was carried out. Police are investigating both the identities of the accused and the sequence of events. The injured operator's statement and medical report may also be relevant to the investigation.
According to the allegations made by the restaurant operator, the dispute began over the non-payment of borrowed money. However, the roles of all those involved and the status of the allegations will become clear only after the police investigation is completed and an FIR is registered. At present, police are focused on obtaining the CCTV footage, identifying the accused and investigating the entire sequence of events.
The incident in Darbhanga has also raised questions related to the security of commercial establishments and disputes over outstanding payments. Disputes between customers and small and large shopkeepers or restaurant operators over payments can sometimes become tense. In this case too, the dispute allegedly began over the payment of an outstanding amount but escalated into allegations of assault and vandalism. The police investigation will establish how many people were directly involved and whose role, if any, was limited to being present at the scene.
The injured restaurant operator is currently undergoing treatment at DMCH. Police are working to identify the accused on the basis of CCTV footage. Police activity in the area has increased following the incident, while local residents are awaiting the registration of the FIR and further police action against the accused.
