A dispute over alleged drug use on a public road escalated into physical assault and stone-pelting in Baiganabad locality of Bihar Sharif city in Bihar’s Nalanda district on Wednesday night. A couple returning home from the market with their child reportedly asked a group of youths allegedly consuming drugs on the roadside to move elsewhere, after which an argument broke out. The youths are accused of abusing and assaulting the couple. The child accompanying the couple was also reportedly injured.
The incident reportedly took place in Baiganabad under the Biharsharif police station area. According to the report, the couple objected to the youths allegedly consuming drugs on the roadside, citing inconvenience to people passing through the area. The youths allegedly became angry and began arguing with the couple. The verbal dispute subsequently escalated into abuse and physical assault.
The child was also present with the couple and was reportedly injured during the dispute. The available report does not provide details about the severity of the child’s injuries.
After local residents came to know about the incident, people began gathering at the spot. Instead of subsiding, the dispute escalated further, with both sides allegedly engaging in stone-pelting. Bricks and stones were thrown in a lane in Baiganabad, creating a situation of chaos in the locality.
The sudden stone-pelting caused panic among residents, with people avoiding coming out of their homes. Information about the deteriorating situation was conveyed to the police.
A Bihar police team reached the spot under the leadership of DSP Amarnath. Police dispersed the people involved in the disturbance and brought the situation under control. After the police arrived, both sides moved back and the situation in the locality became calm.
Police have deployed personnel in the area as a precautionary measure and are maintaining surveillance to prevent any further escalation. According to officials, the situation is currently peaceful and under control.
Police have detained one suspect and are questioning him in connection with the incident. According to police, a youth named Raja is being described as the main instigator of the incident.
Station House Officer Ranjit Kumar Rajak said police teams were conducting raids at possible locations to arrest Raja. Police said the youth had previously faced criminal cases and had been jailed. However, his role and the allegations against him in the present case will be established only after the investigation is completed.
Police have begun examining CCTV footage from cameras installed in and around the area. The investigation is aimed at determining how the dispute began and identifying those involved in the subsequent stone-pelting.
Police said the CCTV footage would be used to identify other people involved in the disturbance and establish the roles of those present at the scene. The questioning of the detained suspect is also part of the investigation into the sequence of events.
According to police, neither side has submitted a written complaint so far. Police are awaiting applications from the parties concerned, after which legal action will be taken under the relevant provisions.
Police said no person would be treated as guilty solely on the basis of allegations and that further legal action would depend on the investigation and available evidence. If CCTV footage or other evidence establishes the involvement of any individual, police may take action accordingly.
