A Delhi court has convicted a 16-year-old accused in the 2017 case of rape and murder of a 60-year-old woman. Expressing shock at the brutality of the crime, the court stated that the order on sentencing would be pronounced later.
NEW DELHI: In a shocking verdict in a seven-year-old brutal crime, a Delhi court has found a juvenile guilty of the rape and murder of a 60-year-old woman. The case dates back to 2017 when the accused not only attacked the woman with an iron rod but also subjected her to inhumane torture. Convicting the accused, the court stated that this crime demonstrates "the pinnacle of cruelty." The next hearing on the sentencing will take place on a future date.
Brutality perpetrated by attacking with an iron rod
According to information related to the case, this heinous crime occurred on the afternoon of November 11, 2017, in Delhi. The accused was a minor at the time, aged between 16 and 18 years. He suddenly attacked a 60-year-old woman and severely injured her with an iron rod.
According to the prosecution, the accused severely beat the woman and then attempted to rape her. Hearing the commotion, a security guard present at the scene intervened, after which the accused was apprehended there. The injured woman was taken to the hospital but succumbed to her injuries.
Court expresses b displeasure over inhumane act
Additional Sessions Judge Amit Sehrawat stated in his order that the accused inflicted injuries on almost every part of the deceased's body. The post-mortem report clearly indicated that an iron rod was inserted into the woman's private parts, which the court considered an ‘offence equivalent to rape’.
The judge remarked, “The actions of the accused reflect his inhumane mindset, and this is not a normal crime but a result of perverse thinking.” The court also stated that this incident is shocking to society and the victim woman was subjected to inhumane torture.
JJB's significant decision on serious crime
Initially, this case was heard by the Juvenile Justice Board (JJB), but in 2018, the board decided that given the nature of the crime, the accused should be tried as an adult. Subsequently, the case was transferred to a special POCSO court.
The prosecution presented b evidence and the post-mortem report, proving that the accused committed both rape and murder. The court deemed this evidence sufficient and convicted him.

In the verdict delivered on October 28, the court established guilt, while the decision on sentencing will be pronounced later. The prosecution is now demanding a harsh punishment to deter such crimes.
