Women to Get 24x7 Work Opportunities
The Delhi government has announced that women can now work in night shifts in shops, offices, and other commercial establishments. This decision has been taken with the aim of revitalizing Delhi's nightlife and providing more employment opportunities to women. The government believes that this will increase the participation of women in the workforce and make them more economically empowered.
What Chief Minister Rekha Gupta Said
Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that this is not just a decision to increase working hours, but a testament to the government's commitment to creating a safe and inclusive work environment for women. She said that Delhi has now joined the ranks of states like Haryana, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, and Madhya Pradesh, where women can work in night shifts.
Conditions and Safety Measures for Night Shift Work
The government has also implemented some strict conditions along with this decision, which every establishment will be required to follow. These include the following provisions:
CCTV Surveillance System
CCTV cameras will be installed in every establishment, which will improve the surveillance system and allow any suspicious activity to be recorded. This step is part of the policy to prioritize the safety of women.
Female Security Guards and Transport Facility
The deployment of female security guards will be mandatory for women working in night shifts. Along with this, companies and establishments will also have to ensure that safe transportation facilities are provided to women so that they can reach home safely at night.
Employer's Consent Mandatory
Women will have to obtain consent from their employer to work in night shifts. This step is to ensure that no woman works in night shifts unknowingly or under duress.
Internal Committee under POSH Act
Each workplace will have to constitute an internal complaints committee under the POSH (Prevention of Sexual Harassment) Act. This committee will be responsible for resolving complaints related to sexual harassment. Its purpose is to ensure that the workplace remains safe and respectful for women.
Other Basic Facilities Will Also Be Mandatory
The government has also said that the availability of toilets, lockers, and other necessary facilities must be ensured in establishments where women work in night shifts. This decision has been taken keeping in mind the basic needs of women.
A New Opportunity for Women
This policy will especially benefit those women who are unable to work during traditional daytime hours or who want to work in night shifts for additional income. Also, the participation of women employees in BPO, customer support, retail, healthcare, and other industries will increase.
