United States President Donald Trump criticised German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, stating that Iran possessing nuclear weapons would pose a threat to the entire world and could trigger a global security crisis.
In a statement issued on his social media platform Truth Social, Trump said that if Iran acquires nuclear weapons, it could place the world in serious danger. He stated that Iran obtaining nuclear capability could destabilise the global security framework and place the international community in a “hostage-like situation.”
Trump directly criticised Chancellor Friedrich Merz, alleging that Merz considers it acceptable for Iran to possess nuclear weapons. Trump described such a position as “completely wrong and dangerous.” He asserted that Western countries should have taken stricter measures earlier to halt Iran’s nuclear programme but failed to do so. He added that the United States is now taking actions that previous administrations had ignored.
Trump stated that Iran acquiring nuclear weapons would not only create a regional issue but a global crisis. He said such a development would pose a serious threat to the global security structure. He also stated that the United States is currently making decisions necessary to maintain global stability, while other countries are responding late to the issue.

Trump further questioned Germany’s economic and strategic position, stating that the country is performing weakly on multiple fronts and its policies are not adequately addressing global security challenges. He said that despite being one of Europe’s largest economies, Germany’s strategic approach appears weak, which could affect the international security balance.
Chancellor Friedrich Merz, in a recent statement in Germany’s Rhine-Westphalia region, said that the United States has not found a clear path to exit the situation involving Iran. He stated that Iran has proven to be more strategic and capable than previously assessed.
Merz also referred to key global oil supply routes, including waterways between the United States and the Middle East, and stated that instability in regions such as the Strait of Hormuz could impact the global economy. He also criticised Iran’s government, particularly the Revolutionary Guards, describing them as a source of regional instability.
Experts state that the Strait of Hormuz is one of the world’s most important oil supply routes. Any escalation of tensions or increase in military activity in the region could directly affect global oil prices and supply chains. For this reason, the international community continues to monitor Iran’s nuclear programme and regional activities.
The exchange of statements between Trump and Germany comes at a time when multiple geopolitical tensions are ongoing globally. Iran’s nuclear programme, instability in the Middle East, and global energy security remain key issues on the international agenda. Analysts state that such statements could affect diplomatic relations and have broader implications for global security.
