Tension in Falta ahead of West Bengal Assembly elections after CAPF search operation

Tension escalated Assembly elections after a CAPF-led search operation under an Election Commission observer led to a confrontation with local supporters, prompting increased security deployment and political exchanges.

Tension escalated in the Falta area of South 24 Parganas district ahead of the second phase of the 2026 West Bengal Assembly elections, following a confrontation between security forces and local political supporters during an enforcement operation.

The incident occurred amid heightened political activity in the state, with voting imminent and the electoral process under close observation nationwide.

Election Commission-appointed observer and senior IPS officer Ajaypal Sharma of the Uttar Pradesh cadre has been deployed in South 24 Parganas to oversee security and law and order. On Tuesday, he initiated a search operation in the Falta area along with personnel from the Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) based on suspected activities. The operation triggered local objections and led to a dispute.

During the search, tensions rose when local residents and alleged supporters gathered near the office of Jahangir Khan. Some individuals alleged that the action was being conducted without sufficient evidence. Protesters raised slogans against the security forces, and the situation escalated into disorder in the area.

Amid the developments, Ajaypal Sharma intervened at the site and warned that strict action would be taken against anyone attempting to disrupt the election process. The situation remained tense for a period, following which security forces undertook measures to bring the area under control.

The incident prompted extensive reactions on social media, where differing views emerged. Some users described the action as an effort to maintain law and order, while others termed it political interference. Videos and images from the site circulated widely.

Falta Assembly constituency is considered a politically sensitive area in South 24 Parganas, where Muslim and minority voters are regarded as playing a decisive role. The constituency has remained under the influence of the ruling party, and electoral contests in the area are closely contested.

The Election Commission had earlier designated the area as highly sensitive. Additional central forces have been deployed in view of concerns over potential irregularities and unlawful activities. According to sources, inputs had indicated possible distribution of money and materials ahead of voting, prompting the operation.

Following the incident, allegations and counter-allegations intensified between the ruling and opposition parties. One side described the operation as a step to ensure a fair election, while the other alleged political pressure and biased intervention.

Security arrangements have been tightened across the region ahead of the second phase of polling. Additional forces have been deployed, and officials stated that all necessary measures are being taken to ensure that the voting process remains peaceful and impartial.
