A fatal accident was reported from Muzaffarpur district, where an elderly woman died after falling from the fifth floor due to a malfunctioning lift in a residential building. The incident led to panic in the area, and family members were inconsolable.
According to police, the lift had not been properly maintained for a long period, which led to the accident. The woman was using the lift as part of her daily routine when, due to a technical fault, the lift suddenly became unstable and the accident occurred.
Preliminary information indicates that the lift doors and safety systems had serious defects, and timely inspection and repairs had not been carried out. Local residents reached the spot after the incident and informed the police.
Police and local administration teams arrived at the scene after receiving the information. The body was taken into custody and sent for post-mortem examination. Police officials said that the initial investigation has revealed serious negligence related to lift maintenance.
Authorities are examining whether responsibility lay with the building owner, the lift operator, or the maintenance agency, and at what level the lapse occurred.
Residents said they had repeatedly complained about the poor condition of the lift, but no effective action was taken. Police have sought documents from the building management and the concerned agency, including lift maintenance records, service logs, and safety certificates.
Officials said legal action will be taken against those found responsible after the investigation. The case may be registered under negligence causing death.
