Haryana MLA Demands Parental Consent for Marriage, Law Against Elopement

Haryana BJP MLA Ram Kumar Gautam has demanded in the Assembly that parental consent be made mandatory before marriage and that a law be enacted against those who elope to marry. He cited the need for this step for social balance and the respect of families.

Chandigarh: In the Haryana Assembly on Tuesday (August 26, 2025), BJP MLA Ram Kumar Gautam demanded the enactment of a law on a new and sensitive issue related to marriage. The MLA said that taking parental consent before marriage should be made mandatory. He raised this proposal during Zero Hour from Safidon and described it as extremely necessary in view of the current social circumstances.

Ram Kumar Gautam says that in recent years, boys and girls run away from home and get married, which often upsets families and parents face situations like suicide. With the implementation of this law, respect and social balance will be maintained in families.

Parental Consent Mandatory Before Marriage

BJP MLA Ram Kumar Gautam says that the incidents of eloping and getting married are increasing continuously. He said that due to such incidents, not only do the family members face mental stress, but sometimes parents are forced to take steps like suicide.

Gautam said, “If parental consent is made mandatory before marriage, both the family and the society will get stability. This step will help in maintaining trust and social respect in families.” He believes that this law will prove to be important in the interest of both the young generation and their families.

MLA also raised questions on the collector rates of land

In his speech, Ram Kumar Gautam also highlighted the difference between the collector rates of land and the market price as a major issue. He said that in many places there is a big difference between the collector rates and the actual market value, which causes loss to the farmers and buyers and promotes corruption.

The MLA said that if this difference is reduced, transparency in the purchase and sale of land will increase and this step will prove to be extremely useful in the interest of the farmers. He appealed to the administration to make immediate improvements in this direction.

Speaker stopped the MLA's speech

The MLA tried to continue his speech during Zero Hour, but Speaker Harwinder Kalyan instructed him to sit down. The Speaker clarified that it is necessary to give notice to speak on additional issues.

Notably, Ram Kumar Gautam had recently joined BJP after leaving Jannayak Janta Party (JJP). Along with expressing his views on important issues related to marriages and land in the Assembly, he also gave suggestions towards social and economic reforms.
