New Delhi: The INDIA alliance has announced its candidate for the Vice President election. The INDIA bloc has declared former Supreme Court Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy as its candidate. Sudarshan Reddy has previously served as the Lokayukta of Goa and has extensive experience in the judicial and administrative fields. This announcement by the INDIA bloc sets the stage for an electoral contest against NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan.

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge announced Reddy's name at a press conference, stating that the name was unanimously approved in the INDIA bloc meeting. He said that this is not just an electoral battle, but a battle of ideologies, which is important for the principles of democracy and justice.

B. Sudarshan Reddy's Political and Legal Journey

B. Sudarshan Reddy began his career in 1971 as an advocate in the Andhra Pradesh Bar Council in Hyderabad. After that, he practiced writ and civil cases in the Andhra Pradesh High Court. From 1988 to 1990, Reddy served as a government advocate in the Supreme Court. In addition, he also worked as an Additional Standing Counsel for the Central Government for six months.

A major turning point in his judicial service came when he was appointed as a permanent judge of the Andhra Pradesh High Court on May 2, 1995. After this, he had the honor of being appointed Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court on December 5, 2005. Sudarshan Reddy also played his role as the first Lokayukta of Goa and contributed to strengthening anti-corruption laws. Apart from this, he served as a legal advisor and permanent advocate for Osmania University.

Radhakrishnan vs. Sudarshan Reddy: The Contest is Set

By choosing B. Sudarshan Reddy for the Vice President election, the INDIA alliance has sent a message that it is in favor of a non-political, impartial, and experienced candidate. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge said that this is a battle of ideologies and Reddy's selection is a symbol of unity in the alliance. In the INDIA alliance meeting, all parties unanimously approved Reddy's name. TMC chief Mamata Banerjee had earlier advocated for choosing a non-political name. However, it was ultimately decided that the alliance's solidarity should be demonstrated by contesting with Reddy.

With this announcement, the contest for the post of Vice President is set. B. Sudarshan Reddy and CP Radhakrishnan will face each other in the election to be held on September 9, 2025. This election is considered extremely important from the perspective of political balance and judicial experience.
