Census 2027 marks India’s first fully digital census, with data collection conducted through an online platform. Under the self-enumeration facility, citizens can enter details related to their household, family members, and socio-economic status directly on the portal. The process is intended to improve the speed and accuracy of data collection and increase public participation. It is also designed to be more transparent and efficient compared to traditional paper-based methods.
The census has commenced with its first phase, the house listing operation. This phase involves preparing a comprehensive list of residential structures across the country and collecting housing-related data, including the condition of houses, available amenities, and other basic information. According to the government, this data will play a role in the formulation of future policies and schemes, particularly in areas such as urban development, rural housing, and infrastructure.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has appealed to citizens to actively participate in the process, stating that it empowers individuals by giving them control over their data. Union Home Minister Amit Shah stated that the census will support the country’s development trajectory and assist the government in ensuring that the benefits of schemes reach the intended beneficiaries.
While the self-enumeration option is available, census teams will continue to visit households to collect information through traditional methods to ensure complete coverage. Citizens have been requested to cooperate with enumerators and provide accurate and necessary information as part of the national exercise.
