India has successfully conducted a test launch of its indigenously developed short-range ballistic missile, Agni-1, from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) on APJ Abdul Kalam Island near Chandipur in Odisha, the Ministry of Defence said. According to the ministry, the missile successfully validated all operational and technical parameters during the test.
The test was conducted under the supervision of the Strategic Forces Command and, according to the ministry, the missile met all operational and technical objectives during the trial.
Agni-1 is part of India’s Agni missile programme and has been developed indigenously by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO). It is a surface-to-surface short-range ballistic missile designed to carry both conventional and strategic payloads. The missile has been developed for high mobility, rapid deployment and precision targeting under varying conditions.
According to DRDO, the system further strengthens India’s “Minimum Credible Deterrence” capability.

During the test, DRDO deployed multiple advanced technologies and designated several targets across different locations, including a wide geographical area in the Indian Ocean region. Ground-based and ship-based tracking stations were used during the flight, while telemetry and radar systems monitored the missile’s trajectory. The missile’s complete flight profile was tracked with precision.
The Ministry of Defence confirmed that all test objectives were achieved and that flight data validated the system’s reliability. All payloads successfully struck their designated targets.
The missile system has been developed by multiple DRDO laboratories with support from industry partners across the country. Senior DRDO scientists and officers of the Indian Army were present during the test. In its statement, the Ministry of Defence said the test demonstrated India’s capability to engage multiple strategic targets through a single missile system and reflected progress towards defence technological self-reliance.
