India Weather Alert: IMD Forecasts Heavy Rainfall Across 24 States on August 22

IMD has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across 24 states on August 22, 2026, including Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Delhi and several northeastern states.

 

India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast heavy to very heavy rainfall across 24 states on August 22, 2026, amid active monsoon conditions. The weather department has also forecast thunderstorms and b winds in several areas.

According to the IMD bulletin issued on August 21, rainfall activity is likely to continue over parts of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Punjab and Uttar Pradesh over the next few days.

The weather department said some areas could experience thunderstorms, lightning and heavy rainfall, which may lead to localised waterlogging, disruption to traffic and landslides in hilly areas. People have been advised to monitor local weather warnings.

For August 22, adverse weather conditions have been forecast across several parts of northern, northeastern and southern India. The states listed include Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Haryana, Punjab, Rajasthan, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Assam, Meghalaya, Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, Kerala, Tamil Nadu and Karnataka.

Rainfall intensity is not expected to be the same across all states. Some areas may receive heavy rainfall, while other locations may experience light to moderate rain accompanied by thunderstorms and b winds.

Delhi is likely to experience rain and thunderstorms on August 22, with rainfall possible along with b wind gusts. The weather conditions may affect low-lying areas, where water accumulation could disrupt road traffic in Delhi-NCR.

The local IMD centre for Delhi-NCR provides separate local warnings and forecasts. People have been advised to check local weather updates and traffic advisories before travelling.

In Uttar Pradesh, rainfall activity is expected to continue in western parts through August 21-22, according to the IMD. Some areas may experience heavy rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms and b winds.

Bihar may also continue to experience rainfall and thunderstorms due to monsoon activity. Heavy rain in several districts could cause localised waterlogging and water accumulation in agricultural fields.

Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand and Jammu and Kashmir may face landslides and sudden road disruptions in hilly areas during rainfall. The IMD has forecast heavy rainfall at isolated places in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir during August 21-22, while rainfall activity may continue in Uttarakhand between August 21 and 27.

People travelling in hilly areas have been advised to follow warnings issued by the local administration and weather department. Unnecessary movement around rivers, streams and landslide-prone areas should be avoided.

According to the IMD, rainfall activity may increase in Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi, along with Punjab, on August 22. Several parts of Rajasthan may also experience rain and b winds.

Weather conditions may vary between western and eastern Rajasthan at the local level, making district-level forecasts relevant for specific locations.

Monsoon activity is likely to continue across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram and Tripura in northeastern India. These areas may receive heavy rainfall along with a risk of lightning.

Recent IMD bulletins have continued to indicate widespread rainfall over several parts of the northeastern states.
