Indian equity markets opened on a flat note on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, amid muted cues from Asian peers and ongoing global uncertainty. The BSE Sensex opened marginally lower at 83,207, while the NSE Nifty-50 opened flat at 25,580, with both benchmark indices trading in a narrow range during early deals.
At 9:20 am, the 30-share Sensex was trading at 83,219.28, down 26.90 points, or 0.03 percent. The Nifty-50 was trading at 25,561, down 23.55 points, or 0.09 percent, indicating a subdued start with no clear directional trend in early trading.
Asian equity markets remained under pressure on Tuesday, weighing on domestic sentiment. Japan’s Nikkei 225 and South Korea’s Kospi recorded the sharpest declines. In Japan, markets reacted to Prime Minister Sane Takaichi’s announcement of early elections next month, which added to uncertainty. In South Korea, investors remained cautious, tracking global economic signals and domestic corporate updates.
In the United States, Wall Street remained closed on Monday on account of Martin Luther King Jr. Day, resulting in the absence of fresh overnight cues for Indian markets.
According to Enrich Money Chief Executive Officer Ponmudi R K, the Nifty continues to trade within a range of 25,500 to 26,000. He said the index has entered a phase of weakness after slipping decisively below the key support level of 25,600. The Nifty is currently trading below its 20-day, 50-day and 100-day exponential moving averages, which, according to him, indicates limited upside momentum.
Ponmudi R K said immediate support for the Nifty is placed at 25,500. A break below this level could lead the index towards 25,400, followed by 25,125. He cautioned that the Nifty could test these lower levels in the event of increased selling during the options expiry or fresh selling by foreign institutional investors.
On the primary market front, several initial public offering-related developments were in focus. In the mainboard segment, the initial public offering of Shadowfax Technologies opened for subscription. In the SME segment, the initial public offering of Aritas Vinyl closed on Tuesday, while DigiLogic Systems opened its SME initial public offering on the same day. Shares of Avana Electrosystems are scheduled to list in the SME segment on Tuesday.
Overall, Indian equity benchmarks began the session with limited movement, tracking weak Asian cues and the lack of direction from US markets, while investors monitored geopolitical developments, trade-related uncertainty, options expiry dynamics and ongoing primary market activity.
