The Indian Health Ministry advises prioritizing hydration for effective weight loss. Discover how adequate water intake can curb appetite, boost metabolism, and help fight India's alarming obesity rates.

Given the rapidly increasing obesity in India, the Ministry of Health has shared easy tips for weight loss. The ministry posted on X, stating that drinking adequate water is crucial for weight management. Research has also proven that drinking water before meals reduces both appetite and calorie intake.

Hydration: According to data from the World Health Organization and ICMR, obesity cases in India have doubled over the past few decades. Amidst this, the Union Health Ministry has appealed to people on X to focus on hydration. The ministry stated that 55–60% of the body is composed of water, and drinking sufficient water can prevent problems like fatigue, lethargy, and weight gain. According to experts, drinking water before meals controls appetite and aids in weight loss.

Health Ministry Advises Emphasis on Hydration

The Health Ministry recently posted on X (formerly Twitter), appealing to people to maintain adequate hydration in the body. The ministry wrote that sufficient water intake plays a crucial role in weight management. Regularly drinking water not only keeps the body energized but also improves metabolism.

The ministry stated that hydration is the first step towards a healthy and fit lifestyle. The graphic shared in the post explained that approximately 55 to 60 percent of the body is made up of water, so a lack of water can lead to issues like fatigue, lethargy, and weight gain.

Obesity Situation in India is Alarming

According to ICMR and WHO reports, the obesity rate in India has nearly doubled in the last three decades. In urban areas, approximately 20 to 30 percent of adults and 10 to 15 percent of children are now categorized as obese or overweight.

According to health experts, this situation has arisen due to a lack of physical activity, stress, insufficient sleep, and excessive consumption of processed foods. In today's fast-paced life, people are consuming more junk food and sugary drinks, which increases calorie intake but reduces energy expenditure.

Water's Effect Also Proven in Scientific Research

Numerous research studies and analyses have found that people who drink adequate water are more likely to lose weight. One study revealed that individuals who drink 500 milliliters of water before meals experience reduced appetite and decreased calorie consumption.

Another research also observed that individuals who drank plain water instead of sugary beverages showed an average weight reduction of up to 0.3 kilograms. This implies that simply improving water drinking habits can make a difference in weight.

Drinking water keeps metabolism active and body cells function better. When the body lacks water, fatigue, appetite disruption, and a lack of energy are felt, leading individuals to eat more and gain weight.

The Connection Between Water and Weight Loss

According to experts, when you drink water before meals, the nerves in the stomach become active and send signals to the brain that the stomach is full. This prevents overeating and reduces overall calorie intake.

A 12-week study found that those who drank water before all three main meals every day lost more weight than those who did not. This research proves that drinking water can be a simple yet effective weight loss strategy.

How Much Water is Needed Daily

According to ICMR and the National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), water requirements depend on an individual's weight, age, and physical activity.

  • Men should drink 2.2 to 4 liters of water daily.
  • For women, this amount should be between 1.6 to 3 liters.

However, this amount can increase or decrease based on weather, exercise, and lifestyle. Those engaged in physical labor and during summers require more water.

Several Harms Can Result from Water Deficiency

When there is a water deficiency in the body, metabolic processes slow down. This reduces the fat-burning capacity, and weight can increase rapidly.

Furthermore, a lack of water in the body can lead to reduced skin radiance, increased fatigue, dehydration, and digestive problems.

According to the Health Ministry, if people improve their daily habit of drinking water, problems like obesity, diabetes, and high blood pressure can largely be prevented.
