The Indian Navy is set to induct the supersonic missile-equipped warship INS Taragiri into its fleet at a ceremony in Visakhapatnam, attended by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and senior naval officials.

The Indian Navy is inducting the warship INS Taragiri in Visakhapatnam, with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and several senior naval officials present at the event. The induction is expected to enhance the Indian Navy’s maritime strength and military capability. Experts stated that this development may be a matter of concern for neighbouring countries such as Pakistan and China.

INS Taragiri has been developed under a “Made in India” project and has a displacement of 6,670 tonnes. Officials stated that more than 75 percent of the materials used in its construction are indigenous, reflecting the maturity of India’s industrial ecosystem. The warship has been designed in accordance with the long-term strategic requirements of the Indian Navy.

INS Taragiri is the fourth ship of the Nilgiri-class (Project 17A) and was constructed at Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Limited (MDL) in Mumbai. It was delivered to the Navy on November 28 last year. The vessel can be powered by a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODAG) propulsion system.

INS Taragiri is equipped with advanced weapon systems, including supersonic surface-to-surface missiles, medium-range surface-to-air missiles, and specialised anti-submarine warfare (ASW) systems. These systems are integrated through an advanced combat management system, enabling rapid response to threats during operations.

The warship has been designed with a low radar cross-section and stealth features, enhancing its operational capability in combat scenarios. Its mission profile is highly flexible, allowing deployment in high-intensity warfare as well as humanitarian assistance and disaster relief (HADR) operations.

The Indian Navy continues to develop as a reliable and self-reliant force. The induction of INS Taragiri reflects this approach. The warship is expected to contribute to the protection of India’s maritime domains and strengthen the country’s maritime strategy and security framework.

Experts stated that warships such as INS Taragiri support India’s position on the global stage as a developed and prosperous nation. The vessel represents the growing capabilities of the Indian Navy and demonstrates the country’s ability to ensure modern maritime security through indigenous technology and engineering.
