Indian Stock Market Opens Lower as Sensex Falls 189 Points and Nifty Slips Below 24200

Indian stock market opens lower on August 25 as Sensex falls 188.92 points and Nifty declines 82.25 points, with Cipla and other major stocks under pressure.

Indian equity benchmarks opened lower on Tuesday, August 25, amid weak and mixed global cues. The Sensex fell 188.92 points, or about 0.24%, to open at 77,180.19, while the Nifty declined 82.25 points, or about 0.34%, to 24,136.80.

The Nifty moved below the 24,200 level at the start of trading. The major indices remained in negative territory from the opening, as investors monitored global market trends, geopolitical developments and domestic cues.

Market breadth was not entirely negative in early trade. According to available opening data, around 1,256 stocks advanced, while 1,051 stocks declined and about 194 stocks remained unchanged.

Among Nifty 50 constituents, Cipla, Hindalco, HCL Technologies, TMPV and Tech Mahindra were among the major declining stocks in early trade. Cipla fell about 1.20%, while Hindalco declined around 1.14%. HCL Tech was down about 0.91%, while TMPV and Tech Mahindra declined around 0.80% each.

Eternal, Trent, Adani Ports, SBI Life and Bharti Airtel were among the stocks that gained in early trade. Eternal rose about 0.70%, Trent 0.65% and Adani Ports 0.59%. SBI Life gained about 0.50%, while Bharti Airtel rose around 0.35%.

Sectoral performance remained mixed in early trading. Nifty IT and Nifty PSU Bank each gained around 0.09%.

Nifty Energy declined 0.39%, Nifty PSE fell 0.37%, Nifty FMCG declined 0.32% and Nifty Pharma fell 0.24%. Nifty Bank, Nifty Realty and Nifty Infra also traded under pressure in early trade.
