Jagdeep Dhankhar's Political Journey: From MP to Vice President and Beyond

Following his resignation from the post of Vice President, Jagdeep Dhankhar is once again at the center of political discussions. He resigned from his post on July 21, 2025, after which speculation about his political future began. Dhankhar, who served as the 14th Vice President of the country, has had a political career full of ups and downs, during which he journeyed from Member of Parliament to Governor and then to the second highest constitutional post in the country.

Started His Political Career as an MP in 1989

Jagdeep Dhankhar began his political journey in 1989 when he contested the election from the Jhunjhunu Lok Sabha seat on a Janata Dal ticket and won by a huge margin. At that time, a total of 15 candidates were in the fray for this seat, but the main contest was with Congress's Mohammad Ayub Khan. Dhankhar received 4,21,686 votes, which was 58.73 percent of the total votes. Ayub Khan received 2,59,705 votes, and his vote share was 36.17 percent. Thus, Dhankhar won by a large margin of 1,61,981 votes. This victory became a b foundation for his political life.

Contested the Assembly Elections from Congress in 1993

After becoming a Member of Parliament, Jagdeep Dhankhar contested the Rajasthan Assembly elections in 1993 on a Congress ticket. He won the election from the Kishangarh seat and succeeded in becoming a Member of the Legislative Assembly. In this election, he received 41,444 votes, which was 44.81 percent of the total votes. His opponent was BJP candidate Jagjit Singh, who received 39,486 votes and his vote share was 42.69 percent. In this close contest, Dhankhar won by 1,958 votes. A total of 11 candidates were in the fray for this seat, but the contest was mainly between the Congress and the BJP.

Played an Important Role by Joining BJP in 2003

After witnessing many turns in his political career, Jagdeep Dhankhar joined the Bharatiya Janata Party in the year 2003. The party appointed him as the head of its legal department. Due to his political understanding and legal knowledge, Dhankhar played an important role in the BJP as well.

Journey from Governor of West Bengal to Vice President

Dhankhar served as the Governor of West Bengal from 2019 to 2022. During this time, he also had sharp disagreements with the state's Mamata Banerjee government on several issues. On August 11, 2022, he became the 14th Vice President of India. However, on July 21, 2025, he resigned from his post citing health reasons. But the opposition parties are pointing towards some other reason behind his resignation, due to which the political rhetoric has intensified.

Even though Dhankhar's resignation is said to be due to personal reasons, discussions about it are not stopping in the political corridors. Now it will be interesting to see whether he returns to active politics once again or takes on a new front.
