A 40-year-old man riding a scooter died after being hit from behind by a speeding Mercedes car in Jaipur's Malviya Nagar area early on Monday. The driver fled the scene, and police are investigating the case using CCTV footage, physical evidence and technical analysis.
According to police, the deceased was identified as Shravan Nath (40), a resident of Ashok Vihar in Jagatpura. At around 4:30 a.m. on Monday, he was travelling on his Activa scooter towards Malviya Nagar for domestic work.
When he reached Jagatpura Road near NABARD Colony opposite Model Town, a speeding Mercedes car hit his scooter from behind. The impact threw him onto the road, causing serious injuries.
Malviya Nagar police and an ambulance reached the spot after receiving information about the accident. Shravan Nath was taken to Jaipuria Hospital, where doctors declared him dead after examination.
Police informed the victim's family about the accident at around 4:52 a.m. The deceased's brother-in-law, Vivek Rawal, reached the hospital along with his sister. The family has demanded a fair investigation and the early arrest of the driver.
Police said CCTV footage from the accident site and nearby locations has become a key part of the investigation. The footage shows the road was largely empty and the scooter rider was travelling in his lane near the side of the road when the speeding Mercedes struck him from behind.
The footage also shows that some time after the collision, the same car made a U-turn from Apex Circle, returned towards the accident site, and drove past while looking towards the location before continuing. Police are conducting a detailed analysis of the footage.
Some eyewitnesses claimed that the Mercedes was being driven by a young woman at the time of the accident. Police have not officially confirmed the claim.
The investigating officer said the driver's identity will not be established solely on eyewitness statements. Police are examining CCTV footage, vehicle registration records and other technical evidence as part of the investigation.
During the collision, one headlight from the Mercedes broke off and fell onto the road. Police seized the headlight and preserved it for forensic examination.
Investigators believe the headlight's model, manufacturing number and other technical details may help identify the vehicle. Traffic camera footage and recordings from private CCTV cameras across the city are also being examined to trace the car's route after the accident.
Malviya Nagar police have registered a case against an unidentified driver under Sections 281 and 106(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
The investigation has been assigned to ASI Mukesh Kumar. Police said a special team is working to identify and arrest the driver while analysing possible routes taken by the vehicle and the available CCTV network.
Police are examining recordings from CCTV cameras in the surrounding area and analysing physical evidence collected from the scene. The investigation is focused on identifying the Mercedes car and its driver.
Police have also appealed to the public to share any video, photographs or other information related to the accident with the investigating agencies. Officials said the case will be investigated impartially and comprehensively on the basis of all available evidence, and action will be taken against the accused in accordance with the law.
