Environmental activist Sonam Wangchuk was shifted from Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram on Tuesday evening for further treatment and enhanced medical supervision following directions from the Delhi High Court. Union Ministers J.P. Nadda and Jitendra Singh later visited Medanta Hospital to meet Wangchuk and enquire about his health.
According to officials, Wangchuk was brought to Medanta Hospital by ambulance under tight security at around 7:30 pm. Upon arrival, he was admitted to ICU 8 under the supervision of internal medicine specialist Dr. Sushila Kataria. A team of doctors is continuously monitoring his condition.
After Wangchuk's transfer to Medanta Hospital, Union Health Minister J.P. Nadda and Union Minister Jitendra Singh met him and received an update on his health. Details of their interaction were not immediately available.
The transfer took place amid ongoing concerns over Wangchuk's health. He had been on a prolonged hunger strike, during which changes were recorded in several medical parameters.
Safdarjung Hospital discharged Wangchuk at around 6:40 pm on Tuesday and handed him over to the Medanta medical team for further treatment. The hospital stated that his essential medical parameters were stable at the time of discharge. However, his pancytopenia condition persisted.
According to the medical report, Wangchuk's serum potassium level was recorded at 3.4 mEq/L. Changes were also observed in certain other health indicators, including urea and uric acid levels. His medical records, investigation reports and other relevant documents have been transferred to the Medanta medical team to facilitate continuation of his treatment.
Pancytopenia is a medical condition in which the levels of red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets are all lower than normal, requiring regular and specialist medical monitoring.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Delhi High Court permitted Wangchuk's transfer from Safdarjung Hospital to Medanta Hospital in Gurugram. The court directed that doctors at Medanta Hospital would continue Wangchuk's treatment and that all his medical records available at Safdarjung Hospital be provided to Medanta at the earliest. It was also stated that the Director of Medanta Hospital would constitute a panel of specialist doctors for his treatment.
The matter came before the court during the hearing of a petition filed by Wangchuk's wife, Geetanjali Angmo. During the proceedings, the court also considered Wangchuk's medical reports, which recorded low potassium levels and elevated urea and uric acid, along with changes in certain other medical parameters.
