India's innings in the first T20 International of the five-match series against England was followed by rain, preventing any further play at the Riverside Ground in Chester-le-Street, England, and resulting in the match being abandoned without a result.
Despite the washout, England wicketkeeper-batter Jos Buttler achieved a significant personal milestone by completing 100 dismissals in T20 International cricket. He became only the second wicketkeeper in the world to reach the landmark after South Africa's Quinton de Kock.
India captain Shreyas Iyer won the toss and elected to bat first. India posted a competitive total in the allotted 20 overs, with the middle-order making important contributions.

The landmark dismissal came in the 19th over of the Indian innings when England leg-spinner Adil Rashid was bowling. On the fourth delivery of the over, India batter Harshit Rana advanced in an attempt to play a big shot but failed to read Rashid's googly. Jos Buttler completed a stumping behind the wickets, registering the 100th dismissal of his T20 International career.
The leading wicketkeepers by dismissals in T20 International cricket are:
- Quinton de Kock (South Africa) – 117 dismissals
- Jos Buttler (England) – 100 dismissals
- MS Dhoni (India) – 91 dismissals
- Irfan Karim (Kenya) – 90 dismissals
- Didier Ndikubwimana (Rwanda) – 89 dismissals
Although the match ended without a result due to rain, India's batting produced encouraging performances. Captain Shreyas Iyer scored a half-century, while opening batter Abhishek Sharma provided the team with an aggressive start.
