Supreme Court to Hear Case on Ban of Kamal Haasan's

Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam's highly anticipated film, 'Thug Life,' has become embroiled in controversy before its release. A language-related dispute has escalated to the point where the film's screening has been banned in Karnataka.

Supreme Court Hearing on Thug Life: The much-awaited film 'Thug Life,' starring veteran actor Kamal Haasan and renowned filmmaker Mani Ratnam, has been caught in a pre-release controversy. A demand to ban the film in Karnataka has intensified, leading the case to the Supreme Court of India. A hearing is scheduled for June 13, 2025, to determine whether the film will be released in Karnataka.

Root of the Controversy: Kamal Haasan's Contentious Statement

The controversy began when Kamal Haasan, during the film's audio launch event, stated that the Kannada language originated from Tamil. Several social and linguistic organizations in Karnataka deemed this statement offensive and inflammatory. What started as a dispute over linguistic pride has escalated to demands for a ban on the film's screening in Karnataka. Several organizations staged protests outside theaters, burned posters, and even issued threats to theater owners.

High Court's Suggestion: Apologize and End the Matter

The Karnataka High Court intervened, advising Kamal Haasan to apologize to the public. The court suggested that an apology could resolve the issue. However, Kamal Haasan refused to apologize, attributing his statement to a "linguistic misinterpretation." He clarified that he did not intend to belittle any language. In a letter to the Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce, he reiterated his respect for all Indian languages and their diversity.

Supreme Court Hearing on June 13

Amidst the growing protests in Karnataka, Mahesh Reddy, a Bengaluru resident, filed a petition in the Supreme Court seeking a ban on the film. The Supreme Court initially questioned why the petitioner hadn't approached the Karnataka High Court. However, after hearing arguments and considering the petitioner's points, the court scheduled a hearing for June 13.

This hearing will determine whether the film can be released in Karnataka. Meanwhile, local administrations in several districts of the state have increased surveillance regarding the film's screening.

Support from Tamil Nadu Government, Special Screening Approved

While Karnataka witnesses protests, 'Thug Life' enjoys considerable support in Tamil Nadu. The state government, adopting a positive stance, has permitted special morning shows. This indicates the significant enthusiasm surrounding the film in Tamil Nadu, where it's viewed as a cultural and cinematic achievement.

'Thug Life' marks the reunion of Kamal Haasan and Mani Ratnam after 38 years. Their last collaboration was the 1987 blockbuster 'Nayakan.' This film is a gangster drama, starring Kamal Haasan alongside Silambarasan T.R., Trisha, Nassar, Sanya Malhotra, and Ali Fazal. Rajkamal Films International and Madras Talkies produced the film, which is being distributed by Red Giant Movies.
