A case has emerged in Pune where a former soldier was allegedly forced to provide proof of citizenship. The incident involving Hakimuddin Sheikh, a Kargil war veteran who served in the Indian Army for 16 years, has raised several questions. On the night of July 26th, a crowd of approximately 30 to 40 people surrounded Hakimuddin's house in the Chandan Nagar area, demanding to see his documents. During this time, slogans were also chanted outside the house.
The police have taken the matter seriously and initiated an investigation. According to the Pune Police Commissioner, a case has been registered against the accused, and strict action will be taken against the perpetrators. Following the incident, police officers met with the victim's family and assured them of their safety.
Hakimuddin's Allegation
Retired soldier Hakimuddin Sheikh stated that when the crowd gathered outside his house, local police were also present, but they did not make any attempt to stop the miscreants. He says that he retired from the army in 2000 and moved to his ancestral home in Pratapgarh in 2013, while his family still resides in Pune.
Team Went Based on Information of Illegal Immigrant
In this matter, Pune Police DCP Somay Munde clarified that the police received information about a suspected illegal immigrant in the area. Based on this information, a police team went there and requested documents. When it became clear that the person was an Indian citizen, they were allowed to leave. He also stated that the police did not go with any third party and that video footage of the entire incident is available.
Notably, Hakimuddin Sheikh joined the 269th Engineer Regiment of the Army in 1984 and retired in 2000 after serving for 16 years.
