Maharashtra's politics are witnessing significant changes these days. In this context, a prominent name is in the spotlight—former minister Annasaheb Dange—who has returned to the Bharatiya Janata Party after 23 years. Dange, along with his two sons, Chiman Dange and Vishwanath Dange, took BJP membership in Mumbai in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and state president Ravindra Chavan. Hundreds of supporters and workers were also with him on this occasion.
Dange's homecoming is being considered a major achievement for the BJP, especially in strengthening the party's support base in Sangli and surrounding areas. Meanwhile, this move is seen as a major setback for the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), particularly for Sharad Pawar, as Dange had left the BJP in 2002 to join the NCP.
Changes in Political Equations
When the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition government was formed for the first time in Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999, Annasaheb Dange was the Minister of Rural Development and also held the responsibility of Guardian Minister of Sangli district. Dange, who is associated with the RSS, is considered one of the old and grassroots leaders of the BJP. In 2002, he left the BJP, feeling suppressed in the party, and joined the NCP led by Sharad Pawar.
Now, after more than two decades, his return has given a new direction to the political equations of Maharashtra. Political analysts believe that Dange's homecoming can strengthen the BJP's position not only in Sangli but also in the surrounding areas. This can directly benefit the party in the upcoming elections.
Prominent Leader of the Dhangar Community
Annasaheb Dange is considered a prominent face of the Dhangar community in Maharashtra politics. He has a good hold and b support base in the community. After rejoining the party, he said that he considers himself fortunate to have returned to the BJP. He also said that now he will contribute to the upliftment and development of the party with full hard work and dedication.
Dange's return is being considered a part of the BJP's organizational strategy, through which the party is trying to bring social equations in its favor in the state.
Eyes on the 2024 Elections
Dange's return has come at a time when the split in the NCP and the weakening position of the opposition alliance are being discussed in Maharashtra politics. In such a situation, the entry of an experienced leader like Dange can infuse new energy into the BJP not only in Sangli but also in the entire South Maharashtra.
This decision can prove to be important for the BJP in the future electoral battle, especially in those areas where the party has not been getting the expected support so far.
