Ladakh approves formation of five new districts increasing total to seven

The government has approved the creation of five new districts in Ladakh—Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Dras—raising the total to seven as part of an administrative restructuring aimed at improving governance and service delivery in remote regions.

The notification approving the formation of five new districts in Ladakh has been cleared as part of an administrative restructuring exercise aimed at strengthening governance in the Union Territory. The newly created districts are Nubra, Sham, Changthang, Zanskar and Dras, taking the total number of districts in Ladakh from two to seven.

The decision has been taken with the stated objective of improving administrative access and accelerating development activities in the region. According to the government, the move is aligned with its “Viksit Ladakh” vision, which seeks to ensure better governance and delivery of public services in remote and geographically challenging areas.

Officials stated that the creation of separate districts for these regions will enable more focused local administration and facilitate quicker decision-making. The reorganization is expected to improve the reach and effectiveness of governance, particularly in areas where administrative access was previously limited due to terrain and distance.

The government said the decision takes into account long-standing demands and regional requirements of the people of Ladakh. It added that decentralisation through the formation of new districts would enhance implementation of government schemes and improve the resolution of local issues.

The administration indicated that the restructuring is intended to bring governance closer to residents by enabling more efficient distribution of services and faster administrative processes. It also stated that the move is expected to support economic activity, including employment, tourism and small enterprises, particularly in regions such as Zanskar, Dras and Changthang.

Officials said that the newly formed districts will be provided with strengthened administrative infrastructure in the coming period to ensure improved service delivery and governance outcomes.
