Maharashtra Municipal Elections: Mahayuti Alliance Finalizes Seat-Sharing Formula

The Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra has finalized its seat-sharing formula for upcoming municipal corporation elections, with a strong focus on the BMC and Vidarbha region.

Before the Municipal Corporation elections in Maharashtra, the Mahayuti alliance has finalized the seat-sharing formula. The BJP and Shinde's Shiv Sena will contest the BMC elections together. The alliance will remain united in major municipal corporations in Vidarbha.

Mumbai: Political activity has intensified in Maharashtra ahead of the upcoming municipal corporation elections. The ruling Mahayuti coalition has almost finalized the formula for seat allocation. The picture is largely clear, especially regarding the Mumbai Municipal Corporation, or BMC. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Shiv Sena (Eknath Shinde faction), and, in some places, Ajit Pawar's NCP, included in the Mahayuti, will contest the elections together.

This year's municipal elections are set to be highly competitive. While the Mahayuti has organized and formulated an election strategy, the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi appears to be fragmented.

Strong Alliance between BJP and Shinde Sena in BMC

The most important formula for the Mahayuti for the Mumbai Municipal Corporation elections has emerged. According to information, the Bharatiya Janata Party will contest 140 seats in the BMC. Meanwhile, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena will field candidates on 87 seats.

Thus, in Mumbai, there will be an alliance between the BJP and the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena on all seats. Ajit Pawar's NCP faction has also been included in the Mahayuti on a limited number of seats. This clearly indicates that the Mahayuti is preparing to enter Mumbai with full force.

Mahayuti Together in Municipal Corporations of Vidarbha

In addition to Mumbai, the Mahayuti will contest unitedly in the municipal corporations of the Vidarbha region. An alliance between the BJP and Shinde Sena has been finalized in four major municipal corporations in Vidarbha, including Nagpur.

These municipal corporations include Nagpur, Chandrapur, Akola, and Amravati. In all these places, the Bharatiya Janata Party and the Shinde faction of the Shiv Sena will contest together. This strategy is clearly aimed at weakening the opposition in Vidarbha.

Where will Ajit Pawar's NCP be included

The role of Ajit Pawar's NCP in the Mahayuti will be limited but strategic. According to information, the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) will also be a part of the Mahayuti in the Chandrapur and Akola municipal elections. In these two cities, the BJP, Shinde Sena, and Ajit Pawar's NCP will all contest together. This is expected to further strengthen the Mahayuti's position in these areas.

A different form of alliance will be seen in the Amravati Municipal Corporation as well. Here, along with the Bharatiya Janata Party and Shinde Sena, MLA Ravi Rana's party will also be a part of the alliance.

What does the Mahayuti strategy say?

This alliance formula of the Mahayuti clearly points to a b and organized election strategy. After the Assembly and Lok Sabha elections, the Mahayuti now wants to contest the municipal elections in coordination with its allies.

The BJP's focus is on large urban areas where its organization is considered b. Meanwhile, the Shinde Sena is expected to benefit from its traditional vote bank in Mumbai and surrounding areas.

Breakup of Mahavikas Aghadi is evident

On the other hand, the position of the opposition Mahavikas Aghadi appears to be weakening. This alliance, which gave a tough fight to the Mahayuti in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, is now almost broken.

The largest party in this alliance, the Congress, is now preparing to contest the elections alone. However, in some places, the Congress is exploring possibilities of an alliance with the Bahujan Vikas Aghadi or the Vanchit Bahujan Aghadi.

Uddhav Thackeray and Raj Thackeray together

The Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray faction, included in the Mahavikas Aghadi, has chosen a different path this time. Uddhav Thackeray's Shiv Sena is now going to contest the elections together with Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena. This alliance is considered an attempt to appease the Marathi vote bank. However, it will be interesting to see how this experiment affects urban politics.

Sharad Pawar's NCP in the field alone

The third major party in the Mahavikas Aghadi, the NCP (Sharad Pawar faction), has also decided to contest the elections alone. Sharad Pawar's party believes that they can perform better on the basis of their organizational strength at the local level.

However, the separate contest by all three opposition parties could benefit the Mahayuti. The division of votes is emerging as the biggest weakness of the opposition.

What will be the major issues in the Municipal Corporation elections?

Development, basic facilities, traffic, water, cleanliness, and corruption will be the major issues in this year's municipal elections. The BMC election in a metropolitan city like Mumbai is always considered decisive in determining the direction of power.

The Mahayuti will seek votes in the name of a stable government and development, while the opposition parties will try to make inflation and local problems an issue.
