Security agencies in Mizoram seized 24.23 grams of Heroin No. 4 during a joint operation in Champhai district and arrested one person. The seized narcotics have an estimated value of approximately ₹18.17 lakh, and further investigation is underway.
Assam Rifles, in coordination with the Excise and Narcotics Department and Champhai Police, conducted a joint operation in the Zote area of Champhai district on July 21 following specific intelligence inputs. During the operation, security personnel intercepted a suspected individual and recovered 24.23 grams of Heroin No. 4 from his possession. The suspect was arrested at the scene.
According to an official statement by Assam Rifles, the operation was part of ongoing efforts to curb cross-border narcotics trafficking.
Investigating agencies estimated the value of the seized Heroin No. 4 at approximately ₹18.17 lakh. Officials said the final valuation will be carried out by the concerned agencies after the investigation is completed.
Following the operation, the seized narcotics and the arrested individual were handed over to the Excise and Narcotics Department, Champhai, for further legal proceedings.
The department is investigating the source of the narcotics, the intended recipient, and whether a larger trafficking network was involved. The case is being investigated under the applicable narcotics laws.
Champhai district is located near the India-Myanmar border and has long been considered sensitive with regard to cross-border smuggling. According to experts, parts of Myanmar are located near the so-called "Golden Triangle" region, which has long been known for the production and trafficking of illicit opium and synthetic drugs.
Security agencies have continued to intensify border surveillance, strengthen intelligence networks, and conduct coordinated operations across northeastern India, where large consignments of narcotics have been seized from time to time.
In recent years, Assam Rifles, border security agencies, state police, and the Narcotics Department have conducted multiple operations resulting in the seizure of heroin, methamphetamine tablets, opium, and other prohibited narcotic substances. Several alleged traffickers and individuals linked to suspected trafficking networks have also been arrested.
Officials said joint operations will continue as part of efforts to dismantle trafficking networks and protect young people from the harmful effects of narcotics.
Officials said border security in northeastern India is important not only for national security but also for social and economic stability. They noted that drug trafficking is often linked to organised crime, illegal financial activities, and cross-border offences. Security agencies are therefore conducting coordinated operations based on shared intelligence to identify and dismantle trafficking networks.
Officials said the investigation is continuing and further action will be taken based on the questioning of the arrested individual. If the investigation reveals the involvement of a larger gang or an interstate or international network, legal action will also be initiated against those involved.
Security agencies appealed to citizens to immediately inform the relevant authorities if they receive any information regarding narcotics trafficking or other suspicious activities.
