Now, Shami has made a significant statement on the issue, clarifying that his omission from the team is not solely a matter of fitness, but a decision by the selectors.
Shami Out of Asia Cup 2025 Selection
India has selected five specialist bowlers for the Asia Cup 2025. This includes three fast bowlers, led by Jasprit Bumrah. However, Shami did not secure a spot in either the main squad or the reserve players. This decision led many to assume it was due to fitness concerns.
However, Shami clarified that he is completely fit and ready to play the Duleep Trophy. He said, "I don't blame anyone for not being selected. If I am right for the team, then select me, otherwise, there is no problem. It is the responsibility of the selectors to make the right decision for Team India. I am confident in my abilities that whenever I get an opportunity, I will give my best. I am working hard."
Impressive Performance in IPL 2025 and Against England
In IPL 2025, Shami played for Sunrisers Hyderabad, but his performance did not meet expectations. In 9 matches, he took only 6 wickets with an economy rate of 11.23. He had to sit out of a few matches. After this, he made a comeback in the format after almost three years in the home T20 series against England. His first match in Rajkot was not very successful, but in the game played in Mumbai, he picked up 3 wickets. Despite this, he was not selected for the Asia Cup team.
Shami stated that he has passed all fitness tests. He also referred to the Bronko fitness test conducted in Bengaluru and mentioned that his health and physical capabilities are completely suitable for Team India. If I can play the Duleep Trophy, why can't I play T20? This statement makes it clear that Shami is fully prepared for a comeback and his aim is to contribute to the Indian team.
