Mokshada Ekadashi is an extremely sacred festival in Hinduism, associated with the attainment of liberation (Moksha) and merit (Punya). On this day, special worship of Lord Vishnu, fasting, recitation of the Gita, and acts of charity are considered significant. Additionally, it is deemed essential to refrain from certain activities.

Mokshada Ekadashi: Mokshada Ekadashi, which falls on the Ekadashi of the Shukla Paksha (waxing phase of the moon) in the month of Margashirsha, will be celebrated with devotion across the country this year on Monday, December 1, 2025. On this day, devotees perform special worship of Lord Vishnu and observe fasts. According to religious beliefs, this fast is considered to grant freedom from sins and pave the way for liberation (Moksha). Gita Jayanti is also celebrated on this very day, further enhancing the significance of this festival.

Religious Significance of Mokshada Ekadashi

The greatness (Mahatmya) of Mokshada Ekadashi is extensively described in the scriptures. It is believed that observing a fast and performing worship on this day liberates an individual from worldly attachments and guides them towards the path of Moksha (liberation). This is why it is considered more fruitful than other Ekadashis.

The primary purpose of observing the Ekadashi fast is to exercise control over the senses, purify the mind, and immerse oneself in devotion to Lord Vishnu. This fast not only leads to spiritual progress but also brings mental peace and positive energy.

Special Worship of Lord Vishnu on This Day

On Mokshada Ekadashi, the worship of Lord Vishnu holds special significance. Devotees wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and clean the home temple to prepare for the puja. Yellow flowers, Tulasi leaves, incense, lamps, and offerings (Naivedya) are offered to Lord Vishnu.

Chanting the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" during the worship is considered highly meritorious. This mantra purifies the mind and connects the devotee with the divine.

Coincidence with Gita Jayanti

An additional special significance of Mokshada Ekadashi is that Gita Jayanti is also celebrated on this very day. According to religious beliefs, on this date, Lord Krishna imparted the teachings of the Srimad Bhagavad Gita to Arjuna on the battlefield of Kurukshetra.

For this reason, reciting the Gita and incorporating its messages into one's life on Mokshada Ekadashi is considered highly auspicious. If the Gita is recited along with the fast's narrative (Vrat Katha), its merit (punya) multiplies many times over.

What to Do on Mokshada Ekadashi

  • Observe Fasting and Self-Control: Devotees who observe the Mokshada Ekadashi fast should maintain self-control throughout the day. It is believed that one should avoid sleeping during the day and perform an overnight vigil (Ratri Jagran). During the vigil, bhajans (devotional songs), kirtans (chants), Vishnu Sahasranama, or Gita recitation can be performed.
  • Perform Worship According to Rituals: Worship Lord Vishnu with yellow flowers, Tulasi leaves, incense, lamps, and offerings (Naivedya). Maintaining faith and devotion in the mind during worship is extremely important. Not just the external rituals, but the purity of the mind is equally crucial.
  • Chant Mantras: Chanting the mantra "Om Namo Bhagavate Vasudevaya" enhances the fruits of the fast. Reciting this mantra mentally or verbally throughout the day is considered highly auspicious.
  • Definitely Recite the Gita: Since Gita Jayanti is also celebrated on this day, reciting the Srimad Bhagavad Gita or studying its verses bestows special merit.
  • Perform Charity: Charity holds special significance on Mokshada Ekadashi. Donating food, clothes, fruits, sesame seeds (til), or money (dakshina) to the poor and needy on this day is considered extremely auspicious. It is believed that the completeness of the fast remains unfulfilled without charity.

What to Avoid on Mokshada Ekadashi

  • Do Not Consume Grains: The Mokshada Ekadashi fast is considered very rigorous. Therefore, consuming grains on this day is completely forbidden. One should particularly avoid items made from rice, wheat, garlic, and onions. During the fast, only fruits (falahar), milk, or water are consumed. Some people observe a Nirjala fast (without water) as well.
  • Avoid Harsh Words and Disputes: The fast is not limited to abstaining from food; purity of mind and speech is equally important. Speaking harsh words, engaging in quarrels, or insulting anyone on this day can diminish the effect of the fast. Endeavor to remain calm and self-controlled throughout the day.
  • Stay Away from Tamasic Activities: One should completely avoid gambling, alcohol, intoxicants, obscene entertainment, and violent activities on this day. Such actions destroy the sanctity of the fast and increase negative karma.
  • Do Not Cut Hair and Nails: According to religious beliefs, cutting hair or nails on Ekadashi is not considered auspicious. Additionally, women should also avoid washing their hair on this day. It is considered better to perform all these activities a day earlier.

Spiritual and Mental Benefits of the Fast

The Mokshada Ekadashi fast is not merely a religious tradition but also a form of spiritual discipline. This fast instills a sense of self-control, patience, and mental peace in an individual. Through a full day of fasting and spiritual practice, the mind becomes focused, and negative thoughts are kept at bay.

In the hustle and bustle of modern life, this fast becomes a beautiful opportunity for self-reflection and self-purification.

Why is it Called ‘Mokshada’?

The name of this Ekadashi itself signifies its importance. ‘Mokshada’ means 'giver of liberation'. It is believed that observing this fast can grant an individual not only worldly happiness but also freedom from the cycle of birth and death. This is why this fast is considered extremely significant for both saints and householders alike.

Both Faith and Discipline are Essential

According to religious scholars, the true fruit of Mokshada Ekadashi is obtained only when it is observed with both faith and discipline. Merely keeping the fast is not enough; purity of both conduct and thoughts is also essential.

Even minor carelessness, such as disregarding rules, uncontrolled speech, or indulging in Tamasic (ignoble) conduct, can diminish the merit of the fast.
