The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) Vice-Presidential candidate, CP Radhakrishnan, was felicitated at a meeting of the ruling coalition on Tuesday. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, along with top leaders from the BJP and its various allies, were present at this meeting.
New Delhi: Amidst the buzz surrounding the 2025 Vice-Presidential election, the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) has nominated senior BJP leader and current Governor of Maharashtra, CP Radhakrishnan, as its candidate. On Tuesday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi honored Radhakrishnan at a meeting of NDA MPs and appealed to all parties, even the opposition, to elect him unanimously as Vice-President.
With a clear majority in the electoral college of the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha, the NDA's victory is considered almost certain. However, the opposition alliance INDIA bloc has indicated that it will also field its own candidate, making the electoral contest interesting.
PM Modi Appeals to the Opposition
Union Minister Kiren Rijiju informed that during the meeting, Prime Minister Modi said that CP Radhakrishnan's life has been full of struggle, service, and dedication. Therefore, he is the best choice for the post of Vice-President. He appealed to all political parties to rise above partisan politics and elect Radhakrishnan unanimously.
CP Radhakrishnan, 67, is an experienced BJP leader from South India. He has held significant responsibilities in both the organization and government levels in his political career. Currently, he is the Governor of Maharashtra. Prior to this, he has also worked in many important positions in the party organization. Radhakrishnan, who is associated with Tamil Nadu politics, also has extensive administrative experience.
He is considered a leader who directly engages with the public at the grassroots level. Prime Minister Modi also mentioned this characteristic of his, saying that Radhakrishnan's experience and long journey of public service will prove to be very useful for the nation in the times to come.
Meeting Between PM Modi and Radhakrishnan
On Monday, Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with Radhakrishnan. During this time, he congratulated him on becoming the NDA's Vice-Presidential candidate. PM Modi wrote on social media platform X, "Met Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji and conveyed my best wishes to him on being nominated as the NDA’s candidate for Vice President. His long years of public service and experience in diverse fields will enrich our nation. May he continue to serve the nation with the same dedication and resolve that he has always shown."
In the Vice-Presidential election, a joint electoral college of Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha MPs votes. In the current situation, the BJP and NDA have a clear majority. This is why political analysts believe that Radhakrishnan's victory is assured. However, opposition parties say they will field a candidate to keep democratic traditions alive.
