Social Media Ban Protests: In Nepal, youth protesters launched widespread demonstrations on Monday against a social media ban. Thousands of young people took to the streets in the Kathmandu Valley and other cities, breaking through police barricades and entering the Parliament premises. While police deployed tear gas and water cannons, tensions escalated. At least 10 people were killed and many injured due to police firing.
Reason for the Protests
The Nepalese government banned 26 major social media platforms on September 4th, including Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Reddit, and X. The government stated that these companies must establish offices in Nepal and register their operations to prevent misinformation and disruption within the country.
The government also clarified that the social media ban would remain in effect until these companies set up their offices in Nepal. This move ignited protests among the youth, as a significant portion of the Gen-Z generation are digital natives whose lives are deeply intertwined with social media.
Violence and Curfew in Parliament Premises
The youth stormed the Federal Parliament complex in New Baneshwor. Initially, they attempted to maintain peace, but the police resorted to tear gas and water cannons to disperse them. Following this, the situation spiraled out of control. At least 10 people were killed and hundreds injured in the police firing.
Three journalists were also shot. Among them was Shyam Shrestha, a journalist who is currently undergoing treatment at Civil Hospital. A curfew was imposed and remained in effect throughout the night. The army intervened to take control of the situation and began removing protesters.
Prime Minister KP Oli's Statement and Ultimatum
Nepal's Prime Minister, KP Sharma Oli, stated that the youth should be aware of the potential consequences of their protests. He warned that maintaining law and order is a top priority.
The government also reiterated that the social media ban would continue until companies register in Nepal. So far, only TikTok, Viber, Nimbuzz, Vitak, and Popo Live have completed their registration.
Who are Gen-Z and Why They Matter
Gen-Z, or Generation Z, is the demographic cohort born approximately between 1997 and 2012. They are referred to as digital natives because they grew up in the era of the internet, smartphones, and social media.
Gen-Z individuals are technologically adept and actively use social media platforms like Instagram, YouTube, and TikTok. This generation is interested in memes, trending challenges, and digital content creation. Furthermore, Gen-Z is known for its open-mindedness and adaptability to new trends.
The protests against the social media ban in Nepal were spearheaded by these digitally aware young individuals. They believe that the ban curtails their freedom of expression.
