Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu Approves Construction of Hundreds of New Settlements in the West Bank
World News: Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has ignited international political turmoil by approving the construction of hundreds of new settlements in the West Bank. This decision presents a significant challenge for Pakistan, particularly for Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and Army Chief Asim Munir, and is likely to escalate tensions in Palestinian territories, raising concerns among Hamas supporters worldwide.
Netanyahu Approves New Settlements
Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced on Wednesday the approval of the construction of 478 residential units in Heshmonaim, 230 in Beit Aryel, and 56 in Giv’at Ze’ev, all in the West Bank. Smotrich described this move as a “strategic step to strengthen settlements and ensure the continuity of life, security, and development.” He stated that since his appointment, a total of 51,370 residential units have been approved in the West Bank.
International Community’s Response
The decision has also caused considerable concern within the international community. Most international organizations and the United Nations Security Council view the expansion of settlements as a violation of international law. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s spokesperson, Nabil Abu Rudainah, bly condemned the move, stating it would “fuel the cycle of violence and war in the region.”

He appealed to the Trump administration to exert pressure on Israel to halt settlement expansion, ensuring stability in the region. This decision comes just one month after a controversial Israeli government document outlining a plan to annex historical parts of the West Bank.
Accusations Against Netanyahu’s Government
In August, Israel approved a contentious settlement project that threatened to effectively divide the West Bank. Following this move, Palestinian and human rights organizations accused Netanyahu’s government of accelerating settlement expansion, effectively eliminating the possibility of a future Palestinian state.
Following the 1967 war, Israel occupied the West Bank, East Jerusalem, and the Gaza Strip. Palestinians claim these territories are essential for their future state. The government of Netanyahu is dominated by far-right leaders who are staunch supporters of settlement expansion, including Smotrich and Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gviir.
West Bank Population
Over 500,000 Jewish settlers have already established themselves in the West Bank, and more than 200,000 Jewish settlers in the disputed East Jerusalem. In recent months, attacks by settlers on Palestinians have also increased. According to the United Nations Human Rights Office, there have been an average of eight attacks per day in October. These attacks include the desecration of mosques, destruction of crops, and sabotage of industrial facilities.
This number represents the highest recorded since 2006. As of November 24th, there have been at least 136 reported attacks. Israeli authorities have occasionally condemned these incidents, but have not taken concrete action, further exacerbating insecurity and tension within the Palestinian population.
