The Bharatiya Janata Party on Tuesday elected Nitish Nabin as its new national president. The five-time Bihar legislator was chosen unopposed, becoming the youngest national president in the party’s history at the age of 45.

Nitish Nabin was first elected as a legislator at the age of 26 and has since won five consecutive terms in the Bihar Assembly. He formally assumed charge at the party headquarters in New Delhi after his name was officially announced.

On the day he took charge as national president, Nitish Nabin began his morning by visiting a temple near his residence, where he offered prayers. He later proceeded to the party headquarters to complete the formalities of assuming office.

In the election for the post of BJP national president, Nitish Nabin was the sole nominee. Prime Minister Narendra Modi proposed his name, and chief ministers of BJP-ruled states along with senior party leaders expressed unanimous support. With no other nominations filed, his election was confirmed unopposed, with the process concluding through a formal announcement.

As national president, Nitish Nabin will lead the party during the upcoming Assembly elections scheduled to be held in April in several states, including Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Assam. The responsibility for overseeing the party’s organisational coordination, electoral strategy and campaign management during these elections will rest with him.

The Bharatiya Janata Party is the largest political party in India and is also among the largest political parties globally. The appointment of a new national president has therefore drawn attention beyond the country.
