Old Lipu in Uttarakhand is offering pilgrims an opportunity to view Mount Kailash from within Indian territory, drawing devotees who are unable to undertake the traditional Kailash Mansarovar Yatra. However, only a limited number of visitors are currently being permitted to access the site.
Located in the Dharchula region of Pithoragarh district, Old Lipu has emerged as a significant destination for pilgrims, as it allows a direct view of Mount Kailash while remaining within the Indian border. Devotees from different states have described the experience as an emotional and memorable moment, particularly those who could not participate in the conventional Kailash Mansarovar pilgrimage.
The initiative, which began last year, has continued to attract visitors this year. Large numbers of pilgrims are arriving at Old Lipu with the intention of viewing Mount Kailash from Indian territory. The location, surrounded by natural scenery and a spiritual atmosphere, has become a notable destination for devotees.
Old Lipu is situated at an altitude of approximately 17,000 feet above sea level. Pilgrims must undertake a trek of about 1.5 kilometres from the final halt to reach the viewpoint. The high altitude, reduced oxygen levels and b winds make the journey challenging.

The administration grants permission only after considering the health condition of visitors and prevailing weather conditions. As a result, not all interested pilgrims are allowed to proceed to Old Lipu. During adverse weather or where health-related risks are identified, visitors are stopped from continuing the journey for safety reasons. The administration has stated that ensuring the safety of pilgrims remains its highest priority.
Although hundreds of pilgrims reach Old Lipu each day, the limited permission system has prevented many from obtaining a view of Mount Kailash. Pilgrims and local residents have urged the administration to allow more visitors to access the site whenever weather and safety conditions are favourable.
Local residents believe that expanding access would also promote religious tourism and benefit the regional economy. Pilgrims have said that viewing Mount Kailash while remaining within Indian territory is a spiritually significant experience.
The administration has clarified that permission will continue to be granted only after assessing safety standards and weather conditions. Officials stated that if weather conditions remain favourable and the route is considered completely safe, allowing more pilgrims to visit Old Lipu may be considered in the coming days. Authorities have also appealed to travellers to check weather conditions before undertaking the journey and to follow all administrative guidelines to ensure a safe and smooth visit.
