A person was killed and several vehicles were damaged after a heavy crane being used for construction work collapsed inside JP North Society in Mira Road (East) in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region on Thursday. Relief and rescue operations are underway, while police are investigating the cause of the accident from all angles.
The crane reportedly lost balance during construction work and fell inside the residential complex. A large section of the crane landed in the society premises, damaging several parked cars and other vehicles. According to preliminary information, one person died in the accident.
Witnesses said a loud noise was heard before the crane collapsed within seconds. People in the area immediately informed the police and fire department. Some people ran to safety, while several residents moved to safer locations. A video of the incident is also circulating rapidly on social media, although the administration has urged people to rely only on official information.
Several fire department vehicles, police personnel and disaster relief teams reached the site after receiving information about the incident. Officials cordoned off the area and launched a rescue operation amid concerns that someone could be trapped under the crane debris.
Rescue teams began removing the debris with the help of heavy machinery and specialised equipment. For safety reasons, the administration advised people to stay away from the accident site and restricted movement in the area during the operation.
Officials said the objective of the operation was to ensure that no other person remained trapped under the debris. The identity of the deceased and information about any other possible injured persons are currently being ascertained.

The parking area of the society was the most affected by the crane collapse. The upper portions of several parked cars were completely crushed, while some other vehicles sustained severe damage. Several two-wheelers were also caught under the debris.
The administration is currently assessing the property damage. Insurance companies and technical experts may also be called to inspect the site. Local residents said the loss of life could have been higher if the accident had occurred a few minutes earlier or later, as people regularly move through the parking area at that time.
The exact cause of the accident has not yet been established. Police and the departments concerned have launched a detailed investigation to determine whether the crane collapsed because of a technical fault or negligence in its operation. Investigators will also examine whether prescribed safety standards were being followed at the construction site.
Officials said statements from construction company employees, site engineers and witnesses are being recorded. Records related to the crane's maintenance, its operating procedures and its technical condition will also be examined. Legal action may be taken against those concerned if negligence is established.
Following the accident, various claims began circulating on social media. The administration urged people to rely only on information released through official sources.
Police said all facts related to the incident are being investigated and a detailed report will be made public after the investigation is completed. The administration also said anyone possessing useful information or video footage related to the incident could share it with investigating agencies to help establish the circumstances of the accident.
The investigation will examine how the crane collapsed and whether technical defects or violations of safety regulations were involved. If the probe establishes a technical fault or disregard of safety rules, action may be taken against the construction agency and responsible officials.
One person's death has been confirmed, while several vehicles were damaged. Police, the fire department and technical experts are examining the incident from all angles. The cause of the accident—whether technical failure, structural failure or human negligence—will become clear only after the post-inspection process and detailed technical report are completed.
