White House Advisor Peter Navarro Made Controversial Statements Regarding India. He Made Racist Remarks on Oil Purchases from Russia and the Modi-Putin-Jinping Alliance. India Stated This was Under National Interest and Strategic Policy and Clarified its Stance.
Trump Adviser Peter: White House Advisor Peter Navarro recently made controversial statements about India. He made racist remarks regarding India's oil purchases from Russia and its international relations, in which he mentioned the word ‘Brahmin’. Navarro alleged that some Indian people are profiteering at the country's expense and that this needs to be stopped.
What Peter Navarro Said
In an interview with Fox News Sunday, Navarro said that Prime Minister Modi is a great leader and the leader of the world's largest democracy. He also said that he does not understand how Modi is cooperating with Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Navarro told the Indian public that they should understand what is happening in the country and that people named Brahmin are profiting at the country's expense.
Trump Imposed Heavy Tariffs on India
Earlier, US President Donald Trump had imposed a 25 percent tariff on India and an additional 25 percent duty on the purchase of Russian oil. India described this as unfair and irrational. When asked about this matter, Navarro said that a total of 50 percent duty has now been imposed and it remains to be seen to what extent tariffs can be imposed without harming India.
Navarro's Allegations on Russian Oil Purchases
Navarro also stated that before the invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, India did not buy Russian oil and its purchases were very limited. He claimed that Russia and India's oil industries made large deals and that Putin gives Modi discounts on crude oil, from which Russia profits significantly. Navarro said that this fuels the Russian war machine and India has merely become an oil money laundering center for the Kremlin.
India's Stance
India has consistently clarified that its purchase of Russian crude oil is based on national interest and market conditions. After the attack on Ukraine, when Western countries imposed sanctions on Russia, Russia became India's top energy supplier. India stated that its energy strategy is formulated keeping in mind global circumstances and energy security.
Criticism of Peter Navarro's Statements
Indian international experts and media have criticized Navarro's statements. They say that Navarro made personal and racist remarks, ignoring facts and the actual situation. Experts believe that India's energy policy and international relations are entirely based on strategic interests and are not for personal gain or corruption in any way.
Navarro's Concerns About the Russia-India-China Nexus
Navarro's statements make it clear that America is uncomfortable with the growing synergy between India, Russia, and China. He criticized the cooperation between Modi and Putin and described India's energy policies as supportive of the war machine. Navarro believes that this cooperation could work against American interests and therefore there is a need to continuously pressure India.
