Prime Minister Narendra Modi participated in a ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme held at Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Park in New Delhi on Friday. The programme was organised to mark the 110th birth anniversary of Bharatiya Jana Sangh leader Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya.
A large number of people, particularly young attendees, were present at the event. The Prime Minister was seen sitting among the audience, listening to devotional music, clapping and playing a small percussion instrument. Devotional songs were presented in a modern concert format, with participants joining in the bhajans accompanied by live music and encouraging the performers.
Modi shared photographs and videos of the programme on social media and described the event as ‘wonderful’.
The ‘Bhajan Clubbing’ programme was organised on the occasion of Pandit Deendayal Upadhyaya’s 110th birth anniversary. Before attending the programme, Prime Minister Modi paid tribute to Upadhyaya and referred to his philosophy of ‘Antyodaya’, which focuses on the welfare and upliftment of the weakest and most needy sections of society. The Prime Minister’s Office also said on September 25, 2026, that Modi paid tribute to Upadhyaya on his Jayanti and highlighted the philosophy of Antyodaya and the upliftment of people at the last rung of society.
The programme combined traditional devotional music with modern live-music presentation. Bhajans were performed using contemporary stage, sound and lighting arrangements, creating a format that combined elements of traditional devotional music and a conventional music concert.
‘Bhajan Clubbing’ is a modern music format in which large groups of people participate together in bhajans, kirtans and other devotional songs. Traditional devotional music is presented with live bands, modern instruments, stage lighting and a concert-like atmosphere.
Such programmes have also been presented in Delhi and some other cities as a new way for young people to engage with religious and cultural music. The format is not a replacement for traditional bhajans and kirtans but presents the same music through a modern performance style.
Prime Minister Modi had previously spoken publicly about Bhajan Clubbing. In the January 2026 episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’, he referred to the trend among young people and described it as a combination of spirituality and modernity while maintaining the sanctity of bhajans. The Prime Minister’s remarks were included in the highlights of the 130th episode of ‘Mann Ki Baat’ shared by the Press Information Bureau on January 25, 2026.
The discussion brought further attention to Bhajan Clubbing events being held in different parts of the country. Videos of such programmes shared on social media have also contributed to the format’s reach among young audiences.
Bhajan Clubbing combines religious and cultural music with modern presentation techniques. Live bands, electronic sound systems, lighting and group singing are used to create an environment in which audiences participate in the performance rather than only listen to the music.
At the programme held in Delhi, Prime Minister Modi was seen sitting with the audience, listening to bhajans and keeping rhythm with the performers. His presence at the event brought renewed attention to the Bhajan Clubbing format.
