Post-Poll Violence Reported in West Bengal as TMC Alleges Attacks on Party Offices

Violence and vandtion results, including alleged attacks on TMC-linked offices in Kolkata. The Election Commission directed state authorities and central forces to take immediate steps to prevent post-poll violence and maintain law and order.

West Bengal has witnessed an escalation in political tension following the declaration of the 2026 Assembly election results, with reports of violence, vandalism and clashes emerging from multiple districts. On Tuesday night, unrest was reported in Kolkata’s historic Hogg Market area, where individuals allegedly arrived with a bulldozer and damaged a Trinamool Congress (TMC)-linked union office and nearby shops.

According to local reports, the group reached the Hogg Market area at around 9 pm and allegedly targeted the TMC-supported union office. Eyewitnesses said panic spread across the locality during the incident, prompting several shopkeepers to shut their establishments while residents moved to safer locations.

TMC leaders alleged that the attack was carried out with political motives and was intended to intimidate party workers. The party directly accused Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) workers of orchestrating attacks and vandalism following the election results.

The TMC claimed that multiple party offices were vandalised and party workers assaulted in several areas as part of attempts to destabilise the post-election atmosphere. The party also alleged that the office of former MLA Arup Biswas in the Tollygunge area of south Kolkata was vandalised. Separate reports also emerged from Beliaghata, where another TMC office was allegedly attacked and a party worker assaulted.

The party further claimed that a crowd targeted the Amtala office of TMC MP Abhishek Banerjee.

Amid rising tension and reports of violence, the Election Commission adopted what it described as a “zero tolerance” approach. The Commission directed the West Bengal Chief Secretary, Director General of Police (DGP), and Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) deployed in the state to take immediate measures to prevent post-poll violence.

The Election Commission stated that post-election violence would not be tolerated under any circumstances and warned that strict action would be taken against those found responsible. According to sources, the Commission also instructed authorities to deploy additional security personnel in sensitive areas and maintain continuous monitoring.

Several photographs and videos claiming to show violence and vandalism have circulated widely on social media following the election results. Kolkata Police appealed to the public to avoid rumours and refrain from sharing provocative content online.

Police warned that legal action would be taken against individuals sharing fake videos or photographs and stated that authorities were monitoring attempts to incite violence through social media platforms. Citizens were also urged to maintain peace and avoid paying attention to rumours.

Kolkata Police said the situation in the city remained under control and that security agencies were maintaining continuous surveillance.

Political analysts said the election outcome in West Bengal had created a highly sensitive political environment, particularly following changes in political positions and the victories and defeats of several prominent leaders. Analysts also noted that post-poll violence has remained a recurring issue in the state, with political parties frequently accusing one another of attacks and reprisals after elections.

According to analysts, political competition at the grassroots level has intensified, clashes between local organisations and supporters have increased, and misleading information on social media has contributed to heightened tensions.

The state government and administrative authorities are now focused on maintaining law and order. Security agencies are conducting patrols in sensitive areas, while additional police personnel have been deployed in several locations.

Authorities at both the state and central levels are monitoring the situation to prevent any further spread of violence.

Reports of post-election violence in West Bengal have also received attention in sections of the international media. However, the administration stated that all necessary measures were being taken to keep the situation under control.
