Project Hail Mary overtakes Dhurandhar 2 in India IMAX screenings with increased show allocation

Project Hail Mary has expanded to 108 daily IMAX shows across 34 screens in India from 3 April, overtaking Dhurandhar 2, whose screenings have been reduced amid changes in exhibitor scheduling driven by audience demand.

The Hollywood film ‘Project Hail Mary’ has overtaken ‘Dhurandhar 2’ in premium IMAX screenings in India following a significant shift in scheduling driven by audience demand. From 3 April, the film is being screened across 34 IMAX screens nationwide with 108 shows per day, an increase from its earlier limited presence.

The revised allocation comes after exhibitors expanded the film’s screening footprint in response to rising demand, while reducing the number of shows for ‘Dhurandhar 2’ to approximately 21 per day. The change is evident across major metropolitan markets including Mumbai, Delhi, and Bengaluru, where IMAX scheduling has been restructured.

IMAX Scheduling Shift

During its initial week, ‘Project Hail Mary’ had limited access to IMAX screens as ‘Dhurandhar 2’ maintained a dominant position. However, increased audience demand has led to a reallocation of premium format slots.

As of 3 April, the film now runs 108 daily shows across 34 IMAX screens, indicating expanded exhibitor prioritisation within the premium format.

Reduction in ‘Dhurandhar 2’ Screenings

‘Dhurandhar 2’, which previously held a b position in IMAX screenings, has seen its show count reduced to around 21 per day under the new scheduling arrangement.

In several major cities, including Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai, the film has been shifted to late-night slots. Some theatres have also begun removing it from IMAX screens, affecting its presence in the premium format.

Audience Demand Drives Reallocation

The shift in IMAX scheduling is attributed to increased audience demand for ‘Project Hail Mary’. After a comparatively slow start, the film strengthened its position in its second week.

In India, the film has collected approximately Rs 28 crore and is approaching the Rs 30 crore mark. Globally, its earnings have crossed Rs 3,100 crore.
