Political tensions have intensified in Uttarakhand following a controversy over Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded action from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the alleged insult to Kharge, while BJP Uttarakhand president Mahendra Bhatt defended the alleged ‘purification’ carried out in Haldwani after Kharge’s programme. Congress workers subsequently surrounded Bhatt’s residence in Dehradun and raised slogans in protest.

The controversy began after Congress national president Mallikarjun Kharge’s programme in Haldwani. Congress objected bly to the alleged purification of the site by some BJP workers following the programme, with Congress leaders describing the action as an insult to Kharge and the Dalit community.

Rahul Gandhi demanded action from Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the incident. He said such treatment of the president of a national political party was against democratic norms and linked the issue to questions of social respect and the Constitution.

Congress alleged that the alleged purification in Haldwani after Kharge’s programme reflected the BJP’s mindset. Party leaders said political opposition was separate from treating a programme venue as impure and carrying out purification, which they described as contrary to democratic and social values.

BJP Uttarakhand president Mahendra Bhatt rejected the Congress allegations and defended the purification carried out in Haldwani as appropriate. His statement further intensified the dispute between the Congress and BJP.

Congress leaders criticised Bhatt’s remarks and linked the issue to the respect of the Dalit community.

The BJP has presented the incident from a different perspective. Party leaders said a religious programme conducted by workers at the local level was being given a political colour. Congress, however, has rejected the description of the incident as merely a religious activity and linked it to the alleged insult of Kharge.

Congress workers staged a protest in Dehradun against Bhatt’s statement. A large number of workers gathered outside his residence and raised slogans. Protesters demanded that the BJP state president clarify his remarks and withdraw them.

Police were also present during the protest. Security arrangements were made to prevent Congress workers from moving further towards the residence. A situation of pushing and shoving between protesters and police was also reported, while police attempted to control the situation.

Congress leaders said Bhatt’s statement was not merely an issue concerning Rahul Gandhi or Mallikarjun Kharge but was connected with the respect of crores of Dalits across the country. Congress asked the BJP to clarify whether the party accepted such language and activities.

After Rahul Gandhi demanded action from the Prime Minister, the political importance of the controversy increased. Congress is preparing to raise the issue at the national level, with party leaders saying the Prime Minister and BJP leadership should take a clear position on matters concerning the respect of constitutional positions and national leaders.

The BJP, meanwhile, said Congress was turning the entire matter into a political issue and misleading the public. BJP leaders argued that it was not appropriate to connect a local-level activity with national politics.

Following the developments in Haldwani and Dehradun, political statements have intensified in Uttarakhand. Congress workers have begun protests against the BJP, while the BJP has been responding to the Congress allegations.

During the Congress protest, workers raised slogans outside Bhatt’s residence. Party leaders demanded that the BJP state president apologise for his statement. Congress warned that if the BJP leadership did not take action, the party would intensify its agitation.

Rahul Gandhi’s response has also become a central part of the controversy. By directly demanding action from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Gandhi has placed the issue before the BJP’s central leadership. Congress is now questioning what position the Prime Minister and the BJP’s top leadership will take on Bhatt’s statement.

Mallikarjun Kharge is the national president of the Congress and has played an important role in opposition politics against the BJP and the central government for a long time. Congress has therefore described the alleged purification following his programme as an issue extending beyond political opposition.

Mahendra Bhatt is among the BJP’s prominent leaders in Uttarakhand and serves as the party’s state president. Congress’s protest over his statement has consequently become directly linked to the state leadership of the ruling BJP in Uttarakhand.

Following the protest in Dehradun, police increased security arrangements. Officials sought to prevent any untoward situation during the demonstration and attempted to persuade Congress workers to remain calm. The situation returned to normal afterwards.

The controversy is currently centred on three developments: Rahul Gandhi’s demand for action from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Mahendra Bhatt’s defence of the alleged purification in Haldwani, and the Congress workers’ protest and surrounding of his residence in Dehradun.

Congress is presenting the issue as one concerning social respect and democratic norms, while the BJP is describing it as an attempt to turn the matter into a political controversy. Congress has said the issue could be taken further if the BJP leadership does not act, while the BJP has rejected the Congress allegations.
