Rajnath Singh calls for balanced global order and zero tolerance against terrorism at SCO defence ministers meeting

India’s Defence Minnisters meeting, calling for a balanced global order, emphasis on dialogue over conflict, and coordinated action against terrorism, while warning against double standards and urging elimination of terror safe havens.

India’s Defence Minister Rajnath Singh called for a firm global stance on peace, stability, and counter-terrorism while addressing a meeting of defence ministers of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation.

Amid ongoing tensions in West Asia, Singh raised questions about the evolving global order, stating that while the term “New World Order” is widely discussed, the key issue is whether the world requires a new framework or a more structured and balanced system. He said the global system should ensure respect for every individual and resolve differences through dialogue without escalating into major conflicts or destruction.

Singh stated that the primary challenge today is not the absence of a system but the growing tendency to question established rules and principles, which he said is weakening global balance.

Questioning the “New World Order”

Addressing the meeting, Singh said that although the phrase “New World Order” is frequently used, it does not necessarily imply the need for a completely new framework. He emphasized that the requirement is for a global system that guarantees equal respect to all countries and individuals and prevents disagreements from turning into conflicts.

He reiterated that the main concern in the current global context is not the lack of an order but the persistent questioning of established norms and principles.

Emphasis on Diplomacy and Dialogue

The Defence Minister stated that international disputes must be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy rather than the use of force. He said the world must move away from war and violence and work towards peace and prosperity. He added that a nation’s true strength lies not in exerting pressure on the weak but in protecting them, describing this approach as reinforcing global cooperation and humanitarian values.

Describing the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation as a platform representing a large share of the world’s population, Singh said the organisation has responsibilities extending beyond the regional level to ensuring global peace and stability. He called on member states to work on principles of cooperation, mutual respect, and shared security to establish lasting peace.

Terrorism Identified as a Major Threat

In his address, Singh described terrorism, radicalisation, and extremism as among the most serious challenges of the present time. He stated that terrorism has become the biggest threat to global peace and security and said that terrorists and their supporters should no longer be allowed to escape punishment. He referred to India’s “zero tolerance” policy as an indication of continued strict action against terrorism.

He also warned the international community against adopting double standards on terrorism, stating that terrorism has no religion or nationality and that the killing of innocent people cannot be justified under any circumstances. He urged member countries to work together to eliminate safe havens for terrorism and reject any attempts to provide political support or legitimacy to such activities.
