Scrub Typhus Cases Surge in Purvanchal Region

A surge in scrub typhus cases is being reported in Purvanchal, India. Learn about the symptoms, causes, and preventative measures to protect yourself.

Scrub typhus is spreading rapidly in the districts of Purvanchal. A large number of patients have tested positive in investigations conducted at Sir Sunderlal Hospital at BHU, Varanasi. So far this year, 2,790 suspected patients have been tested, of which 493 have been confirmed to have scrub typhus. According to figures, approximately 19 percent of patients have been found to be infected with the disease.

According to doctors, scrub typhus is a bacterial infection that spreads through the bite of small insects (mites). These insects are commonly found in bushes, fields, and grassy areas. People in rural areas and those working in fields are more susceptible to the disease.

The symptoms of scrub typhus include high fever, headache, and body aches. In many cases, the symptoms are similar to those of dengue or viral fever, leading to delayed diagnosis, which can worsen the patient's condition.

Doctors have appealed to the public not to ignore prolonged fever and to get tested immediately. They have also advised wearing full clothing and maintaining hygiene while working in fields or bushy areas. The health department has also increased vigilance in view of the rising number of cases.
