Sensex and Nifty Open Lower on February 27 2026; IT Stocks Advance While Banking and Auto Shares Under Pressure

Domestic equity markets opened lower on Friday, 27 February 2026, extending losses at the start of the final trading session of the week. Benchmark indices Sensex and Nifty opened in the red amid global cues and recent statements by US President Donald Trump regarding tariffs, which influenced investor sentiment and increased caution in the market.

At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex declined 28.13 points, or 0.03 percent, to 82,220.48. The NSE Nifty 50 index fell 36.70 points, or 0.14 percent, to open at 25,459.85. Although the decline was marginal, market breadth indicated weakness.

In early trade, 43 of the 50 Nifty 50 constituents opened in the red, while 7 stocks advanced. Among the 30 Sensex constituents, 5 stocks opened higher and 24 declined, while Power Grid opened flat.

Within the Sensex pack, IT major Infosys recorded the highest gain, opening 2.77 percent higher. Tech Mahindra advanced 2.47 percent, HCL Tech rose 1.43 percent, and TCS gained 0.93 percent. Trent also opened marginally higher by 0.06 percent.

On the downside, Bharti Airtel declined 1.26 percent at the open. IndiGo fell 1.24 percent, Maruti Suzuki slipped 1.08 percent, UltraTech Cement declined 1.04 percent, and Adani Ports was down 0.95 percent. Reliance Industries fell 0.84 percent, Mahindra and Mahindra declined 0.77 percent, and Hindustan Unilever slipped 0.75 percent.

In the banking and financial segment, ICICI Bank declined 0.49 percent, Axis Bank fell 0.38 percent, SBI slipped 0.29 percent, and HDFC Bank was down 0.09 percent. Bajaj Finserv declined 0.64 percent, Bajaj Finance fell 0.27 percent, and Kotak Mahindra Bank was down 0.62 percent.

Among other sectors, Tata Steel declined 0.60 percent, NTPC slipped 0.04 percent, BEL fell 0.70 percent, ITC declined 0.28 percent, and Asian Paints was down 0.25 percent. Larsen and Toubro declined 0.22 percent, Titan fell 0.15 percent, and ETERNAL opened 0.45 percent lower.

Recent statements by US President Donald Trump on tariffs, following a US Supreme Court decision, have contributed to uncertainty in global markets. The developments have affected investor sentiment, with participants awaiting further clarity on trade policy. Volatility in global markets has had a direct impact on Indian equities.
