Indian equities recovered on Friday, October 9, 2026, following a sharp decline in the previous trading session. Buying across information technology, FMCG and banking stocks lifted the benchmark indices, with the BSE Sensex gaining more than 879 points and the NSE Nifty closing above the 22,500 mark.
At the close of trading on Friday, the Sensex advanced 879 points, or approximately 1.23%, to 72,472. The Nifty climbed 289 points, or around 1.30%, to 22,520.
Market breadth was positive, with 2,344 stocks closing higher and 1,686 declining, according to the available data. The gains were spread across several stocks, although not all companies participated in the recovery.
India VIX, which measures expected market volatility, fell approximately 6.09% to around 14.
Information technology stocks contributed to the market's recovery, with the Nifty IT index gaining approximately 3%, according to the available data.

The Nifty FMCG index advanced around 2.25%, while the Nifty PSU Bank index rose 1.62% and the Nifty Services index gained 1.79%.
Broader market indices also closed higher. The midcap index rose approximately 1.46%, while the smallcap index gained around 0.55%.
Apollo Hospitals, ITC, Eicher Motors, TCS, HCL Tech and Adani Ports were among the leading gainers in the Nifty.
Apollo Hospitals shares advanced 4.72%, while ITC gained 4.31% and Eicher Motors rose 4.17%. TCS climbed 3.85%, HCL Tech gained 3.38% and Adani Ports advanced 3.10%, according to the available data.
The gains extended across information technology, consumer goods, automobiles and other major sectors.
Despite the broader market recovery, several major stocks ended the session in negative territory.
Cipla declined 0.44%, JSW Steel fell 0.61% and Reliance Industries dropped 0.65%, according to the available data.
