The death toll in the tunnel accident at an under-construction site in Sikkim's Namchi district has risen to 20. Rescue operations are continuing to evacuate other workers trapped inside the tunnel.
The accident occurred on 20 July 2026 in an under-construction tunnel at the Samardung area of Namchi district in Sikkim. The tunnel is reported to be associated with NHPC's 500 MW Teesta Stage-VI Hydroelectric Project.
According to preliminary information, a suspected methane gas buildup trapped between rocks inside the tunnel was suddenly released and exploded, causing a section of the tunnel to collapse. The collapse blocked the exit route for workers and project personnel who were inside.
Following the accident, teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), police, fire services and other concerned agencies have been conducting rescue operations.
Officials said rescue teams are facing difficulties due to toxic gases, low oxygen levels, poor visibility and debris inside the tunnel.
According to officials, the presence of gases inside the tunnel continues to pose a risk to rescue personnel. Teams equipped with specialised equipment and protective gear are removing debris and attempting to reach trapped workers. The priority of the operation remains locating and safely evacuating survivors.
Sikkim Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang announced an ex gratia payment of ₹4 lakh for the families of workers who died in the accident. He also announced financial assistance of ₹50,000 for those injured.
The state government has also announced the formation of a special committee to conduct a detailed investigation into the cause of the accident.
The Chief Minister visited the accident site and directed officials to expedite rescue operations. The administration said efforts are being made to ensure all rescue teams are provided with the necessary safety equipment and technical support.
Following the accident, Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang over the phone to review the situation.
The Prime Minister assured all possible assistance from the Central Government. The Centre also announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh for the next of kin of those who died and ₹50,000 for those injured.
