The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana aims to encourage the installation of rooftop solar systems in residential properties. Eligible households receive central financial assistance for installing solar panels in accordance with the scheme's prescribed rules.
Rooftop solar panels generate electricity during daylight hours. Depending on applicable net metering arrangements and the rules of the electricity distribution company, surplus electricity can be supplied to the grid. This can reduce consumers' electricity bills. Whether a bill can be reduced to zero depends on electricity consumption, solar system capacity, weather conditions and applicable charges.
The scheme aims to provide eligible domestic consumers with up to 300 units of free electricity per month. Actual savings may vary according to each household's electricity requirements and the performance of its solar system.
The organising committee and administration have appealed to residents of the Naugachia subdivision and surrounding rural areas to attend the Solar Mela. The event will provide an opportunity for consumers to obtain information about the scheme's conditions, application procedures, subsidies and financing options.
The use of solar energy can also help reduce dependence on conventional electricity sources and offer environmental benefits. The mela is intended to familiarise local households with rooftop solar system options and the processes involved in adopting them.
