In a historic first for the Railway Protection Force (RPF) of India, a female officer has assumed responsibility for the highest post. Sonali Mishra, a senior IPS officer from the 1993 batch, has been appointed as the new Director General of the RPF. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet of the Central Government had approved her name, and she has now formally taken charge.

The RPF was established in 1882, and since then, it has always been led by male officers. Now, breaking this tradition for the first time, a female officer has been given command.

Sonali Mishra is from the Madhya Pradesh Cadre

Sonali Mishra is originally a senior IPS officer from the Madhya Pradesh cadre. She has been appointed as the Director General of RPF until October 31, 2026. Upon being appointed to this position, she has created history, and this is being considered a major step towards women's empowerment.

Three Decades of Extensive Experience

Sonali Mishra has more than three decades of experience in the police service. She is known as a dynamic, disciplined, and hardworking officer. Before joining the RPF, she has worked in many important positions in the Madhya Pradesh Police. She was the Additional Director General of Police at the Police Training and Research Institute in Bhopal and has also served as the Director of the Madhya Pradesh Police Academy.

Includes CBI, BSF, and International Experience

Sonali Mishra's area of work has not been limited to the state level. She has also held important responsibilities in India's Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Border Security Force (BSF). In addition, she has also represented India in the United Nations' Kosovo Peace Mission, where her work was appreciated internationally.

Gave First Statement Upon Assuming Office

Upon taking command of the RPF, Sonali Mishra, while speaking to the media, said that she would fulfill the force's motto "Yasho Labhasva" with complete dedication and commitment. The meaning of this motto is – Vigilance, Courage, and Service. She thanked the government and the department, expressing confidence that she would give her best in this role.

What is the Work of the Railway Protection Force?

The Railway Protection Force is one of the largest security forces in India, whose main job is to ensure the security of the Indian rail network. The RPF is responsible for the security of railway stations, trains, yards, and other railway premises throughout the country. In addition, ensuring the safety of passengers, preventing theft, keeping an eye on human trafficking, and taking action against terrorism-related activities are also part of its responsibilities.

What is the Salary of the Director General?

The Director General (DG) of the RPF is paid as per the rules of the Central Government. Their basic salary is ₹2,25,000 per month. Along with this, they also receive dearness allowance, house rent allowance, and other facilities. This post is considered one of the most prestigious and senior positions in the Indian security forces.
