Sonam Wangchuk Admitted to Safdarjung Hospital After 20-Day Hunger Strike Following Delhi High Court Directions

Clilhi Police removed him from Jantar Mantar following 20 days of an indefinite hunger strike. The action was taken after his health deteriorated and in accordance with Delhi High Court directions, while doctors continue to monitor his condition.

Climate activist and educationist Sonam Wangchuk was admitted to Safdarjung Hospital by Delhi Police early on Saturday after being removed from Jantar Mantar following 20 days of an indefinite hunger strike. The action was taken in view of his deteriorating health and in compliance with directions issued by the Delhi High Court.

Wangchuk had been on an indefinite hunger strike at Jantar Mantar in New Delhi since June 28. His protest focused on various social, environmental and constitutional issues related to Ladakh. During the 20-day protest, a large number of supporters remained at the site, and the movement received attention across India and internationally.

According to Delhi Police, Wangchuk's continuously deteriorating health made immediate medical care necessary. Officials said the action was carried out in accordance with Delhi High Court directions, which required regular monitoring of his health and immediate hospitalisation if needed.

A police team reached Jantar Mantar early on Saturday and, with medical assistance, shifted Wangchuk to Safdarjung Hospital. He is undergoing treatment under the supervision of specialist doctors.

According to a medical bulletin issued on Friday, Wangchuk's weight had declined by approximately 9 kilograms to 56.55 kilograms due to the prolonged fast. Doctors stated that the extended hunger strike could have serious effects on the body and that timely medical intervention was necessary.

Medical experts said prolonged fasting can increase the risk of nutritional deficiency, electrolyte imbalance, muscle weakness and other complex health conditions. They had therefore recommended continuous medical monitoring.

Delhi Police said some protesters objected when officials began the process of taking Wangchuk to the hospital in compliance with the court's order. This led to a brief period of commotion.

Police stated that the entire operation was conducted peacefully and with maximum restraint. No major confrontation was reported. The administration appealed to protesters to maintain law and order and vacate the protest site peacefully.

Wangchuk has long raised issues related to environmental conservation, sustainable development and the rights of Ladakh at national and international levels. His hunger strike received support from different parts of India as well as from members of the Indian diaspora and environmental supporters abroad.

Experts said the matter extends beyond Wangchuk's health and also concerns the balance between democratic protest, environmental issues and administrative responsibilities.

Wangchuk continues to receive treatment at Safdarjung Hospital, where doctors are closely monitoring his condition. It remains unclear whether his hunger strike will officially be considered over following his hospitalisation.

His supporters are considering their next course of action. The administration said its priority is to ensure Wangchuk's health and safety, while his supporters have called for meaningful dialogue on the issues raised by the protest.
