Sowcar Janaki Dies at 94 in Chennai After Seven-Decade Film Career

Veteran South Indian actress Sowcar Janaki died in Chennai on August 21, 2026, aged 94. She acted in more than 400 films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema and received the Padma Shri in 2022.

Sowcar Janaki, the veteran South Indian actress, died in Chennai on August 21, 2026, at the age of 94. She had been admitted to a private hospital in Chennai in recent days due to health problems and was undergoing treatment under intensive medical supervision.

Sowcar Janaki’s death was confirmed by actor Nassar, president of Nadigar Sangam. According to reports, she died at 1:59 pm. She had been receiving treatment for age-related health problems and had been under intensive medical supervision at a private hospital in Chennai.

According to Nadigar Sangam president Nassar, Sowcar Janaki’s mortal remains will be kept for public viewing from 5 pm on Senthoph Road in Teynampet, Chennai. Members of the film industry, family, friends and fans will be able to pay their respects.

Janaki had a career spanning more than seven decades and worked with actors from several generations. She appeared in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam films and played a wide range of roles during her career.

Sowcar Janaki began her acting career in the 1950s with the Telugu film ‘Shavukaru’. She became known as ‘Sowcar’ Janaki after the film. She subsequently worked extensively in Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam cinema.

During her career, she acted in more than 400 films. She was also associated with theatre and was known to have participated in more than 300 stage productions. In the early part of her career, she also worked as a radio artist.

Janaki performed a variety of roles, including serious emotional characters, family roles and character parts. Her work with renowned director K. Balachander showcased different aspects of her acting.

Sowcar Janaki received several honours for her contribution to Indian cinema and the arts, including Kalaimamani, two Nandi Awards and the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award for her contribution to South Indian cinema.

The Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 2022. According to her official Padma Awards profile, the honour recognised her contribution over a career spanning more than seven decades and more than 400 films.

Her achievements extended beyond awards, and she was regarded as a senior artist among several generations of performers and as an important part of the legacy of South Indian cinema.

Sowcar Janaki continued to remain associated with acting despite advancing age. Her last film work was associated with the Telugu film ‘Anni Manchi Sakunamule’, which was released in 2023.

Following news of her death, several artists and fans from the South Indian film industry paid tribute to her on social media. Her career spanned several periods of Indian cinema, from the era of black-and-white films to modern regional cinema.
