Following an anti-corruption movement in Nepal, Sushila Karki became interim Prime Minister. She announced compensation for the families of the deceased and expressed confidence in ensuring stability and economic reform in the country through a six-month master plan.

Nepal: The ongoing public movement against corruption and governmental inefficiencies in Nepal has caused significant political upheaval. This movement has garnered widespread public support and ignited protests against several high-ranking government officials. Meanwhile, former Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, Sushila Karki, has assumed office as the interim Prime Minister of Nepal, clarifying that her government is not here to enjoy power but to stabilize the country.

73-year-old Sushila Karki stated to the media, "We have not come to taste power. Our responsibility is only for six months. After this period, the new parliament will be handed over the reins. We cannot succeed without the support of the public."

Appreciation for 'Gen Z' Youth-Led Movement

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki lauded the anti-corruption movement, stating that it was led by 'Gen Z' youth. She added that this movement played a crucial role in ousting KP Sharma Oli's government. She announced relief for the families of the deceased, declaring that those who lost their lives in this movement would be accorded the status of martyrs.

Karki explained that the families of the deceased would receive 10 lakh Nepali rupees as compensation. Additionally, the government will bear the complete medical expenses of those injured during the movement. Financial assistance will also be provided if necessary. According to a report in 'The Himalayan Times', 72 people have died in recent incidents, including 59 protesters, 10 prisoners, and 3 police personnel.

Compensation Plan

Prime Minister Karki expressed concern over the vandalism and arson that occurred during the movement. She stated that many private properties have been damaged and the government will investigate this and arrange compensation for the affected individuals. She indicated that compensation could be provided in cash, through soft loans, or by other means.

Reconstruction Priority

Interim Prime Minister Sushila Karki stated that Nepal is currently facing a severe economic crisis. Therefore, her government's priority will be to stabilize the country's economy and accelerate reconstruction efforts. She also mentioned that the objective of coming into power is solely to serve the country, not to gain personal benefits. Karki explained that the government, understanding the public's demands, will focus on administrative reforms. Bringing transparency to corruption and legal procedures will be her primary focus.

Six-Month Master Plan

Sushila Karki clarified that her government is in power for only six months, during which they have prepared a detailed master plan. Under this plan, the government will take steps to bring stability to the economy, prevent corruption, and provide relief to the affected public. She stated that her government will work with the interests of the youth and the public as paramount. Furthermore, strengthening democratic processes and maintaining peace in the country until the next election will be her responsibility.
